Sunday, August 30

Wow--I've missed some days doing the blog--it's been a busy time around here. Friday was spent going to southern Ohio to get our new horse, Maverick. He's a Tennessee Walker, is 9 years old, a gelding and is ever so sweet. While we still miss Wilson terribly, he does fill a sad whole in our hearts. He and Mercy, Millie and Pickles are getting along just great! A well rounded family!

All is good here. The kittens are happy, healthy and so energetic. Such a wonderful group of cats (if I do say so myself! lol).  I'm watching Elise. She is such a beauty. She just bumped into Derecho twice, but is figuring out how to get around him. Her sight is quite impaired--that doesn't slow her up though! She climbs everywhere. She figures out how to accomplish great things!

Valeta's 5 kittens are simply awesome! They climb, run and tear around. All look good. Little Fawn is right there in the pack with them. Her fur seems to be growing daily--such a beauty. She loves to run up to Bender, grab his tail and then runs off! He looks at her with just a bit of annoyance--he's so tolerant. Emmitt is growing---big, strong and more big! He's going to be a good size boy.

We've had 2 nights of BOXES that we would like to give thanks too:
Wednesday night:
FaithyMD--jingle kitty balls, mylar balls, case of 9 Lives, 2 cases Fancy Feast
Misspixie1/Mary M & her kitties Milo, Jeofry & Pixie--potty bags, coffee mug, cat trophy, Pet Stage soft toy, bonito flakes, book, Purr pillows, Royal Canin kitten dry, toys, big fur rug (they love it!), note pads, 2 purple bowls, 2 Save Our Pets signs, a neat blue bed with cushion (they all love this!)

BellaBelle/Tammy--1000 of 6 inch paper plates, 24 Sparkle paper towels
Justme/Kathy--For raffle--20 inch Studio M art pole & 3 art pots!

Happy Birthday to Thomas who would have been 6 years old on Aug. 26th. He is still missed.

Foster Peggy S. has brought back the last of the 6 kittens. They are Lily Rose, Squeeky, Snookie, Morgan David, Tara and Dutchy. They all look good. Each week that she would bring them for a playtime, we would keep their vaccines, wormings, etc. updated. They are now in the back Thumper's Room. There is now mama her 4 kittens, the 6 kittens and Froggy--11 kittens total. All are wonderful. The really nice thing is that they enjoy playing with Froggy. Sometimes there are 4-5 kittens napping with him. Many thanks to Peggy for being our foster mama---she's terrific!

Pania is doing better. This combination of meds is working! She is happier and relaxed! Sophie is amazing. Her wound is 95% healed--the ability of cats to heal is astounding. We've been working on going up to her without scaring her and it's helping! We can now pick her up and love on her. And she purrs too! Asha loves to be groomed. She will stare a person down (if holding a brush) until she gets her 5 minutes of brushing!

As you may know, Paul fell from a high shelf about 5 days ago and hurt his back leg--his knee. He spent a couple days resting and now is running like crazy again. Can't keep a good kitten down! Little Gustave is still having trouble with his front leg--due to nerve damage from the bite wound that he arrived with. The wound has healed, but the nerve is damaged. He drags the leg, which isn't good. Dragging it has caused a few sores on the toes. He will soon be scheduled for surgery--an amputation. I'm sure it won't hold this boy down--he's young, active and loves to play. Just think how much faster he will be!

13 more days to Catstock! We have been working for weeks and weeks on this event. It's going to be fun! I just heard confirmation from Strawberry Hill, the band. They are ready and excited to come. Their music is fantastic! This will be their 3rd year with us. We've been talking to Millie and Pickles about practicing for their part in the Bingo Game! They're ready! dfc

Tuesday, August 25

Wow--what a storm we had Sunday evening. Trees down, many branches down, a million leaves everywhere. As soon as the rain stopped and before the next outburst, we went outside to check on the cats. A few were damp, but they all were safe and sound. Our electricity was out for hours, but........ our generator kicked in and worked like a pro! Yeah for Jenna Radar! It's kicked on a couple times for short outages, but this was a long one.  It was wonderful not to have that worry--keeping the cats from overheating, having water, having lights, etc.

We've had 2 BOX times to catch up on! The kitties and I are very grateful!

Isn't every day wonderful? Each day can offer something that can bring joy. This coming Friday will be an extra special day for this family. As you know, we lost our Wilson horse 2 weeks ago. He has been so so missed. What a wonderful friend he was. This Friday, we are looking to bring home a new friend to the farmyard. His name is Maverick. He is 9 years old and another Tennessee Walker. We will leave around 11:30 am. It's a 2 1/4 hour drive going there. Hauling the trailer home will take a bit longer. I expect we will arrive home early evening. Maverick sounds like the perfect fit for our family and for the farmyard. Mercy is happy about this decision too!

We had 3 adoptions this weekend, but actually 5 cats left us! First, Corby and Scott were adopted together. Pictures have already been posted on facebook and it sounds like they are doing good. So happy for these 2 boys. Then it was time for Dude and Jupiter to go to their home with Josh. This is Ashlyn's fiance--he finally got to move into his new homes! Grandma's been kittysitting for a while. They also together adopted Rochester. Should be a great group of 3 boys.

Lewes is up in the Main Area now and is doing great. He's making new friends everyday. Fancy is also doing good. Something is on her legs--looks/feels like a glue substance. We just cannot get it off. So, we will be doing a bit of shaving on her legs to get it off. Gentry is also settling in so nicely. A very nice boy.

Charleston is a love bug.  If you come and visit, be sure to hold him. He will melt in your arms and then drool on your hands! Love this boy. Hensley sure does love his pen #4. When he wants in it and he sees us going there with a bit of food, he gets SO excited--he tries to get up there by himself. He just loves his pen. He eats, takes a naps and then is ready to come back out. It's like his own kingdom. Hensley turned one years old yesterday! He came to us from NC when he was 5 months old.

The Covies are doing great. It is so wonderful to go out to the Playground and sit there and wait for them to come to you! They love people and visits. The Porchies too are doing great. It's obvious they are not going to enjoy going into the Playground--none that I've tried has worked out. The Covies have made it clear that it's not a Porchie place. So....we will need to get one more shed--we will call it the Porchie Haven. The "old" Porchie Haven is now called Covie Haven. At breakfast, I frequently feed 15 Porchies. That is too many for the sunporch, so the Porchie Haven is a must for this winter and bad weather. We will work on this.

I love this saying--"Nothing compares to the pain of a belly ache from laughing too hard with friends".  I love our friends--it's always so nice to share a laugh!

Saturday, August 22

Here's a black/white kitten, there's a brown tiger kitten, here comes a calico, there's a couple buffs and golds---they're everywhere! Kittens, kittens. Definitely the time to do the kitten shuffle. All is fine here. The health of the cats and kittens are really very good. What a noticeable difference in the upper respiratory infections, since we started using the cat bordetella vaccine. Every cat that comes in gets this nasal vaccine.

Pania went to the vets yesterday. My cat Zeke also went but he was brought back, so they could use his time for an emergency that came in. But, Pania stayed and had her bladder ultrasound. It's good! No stones, no tumors. Whew---that's a relief. Her urinalysis showed quite a bit of blood, which we already knew. They are doing a culture/sensitivity now on the urine. In the meantime, her meds have been adjusted a bit. Just hoping to find something that works for this sweet girl. Darcy said she was excellent there (of course!)--no sedation needed.  She cooperated fully with her tests.

Froggy has been spending part of each day here in the Main Area. You all can help us educate! If someone asks about "that kitten that is rolling all over", just explain to them about Froggy and how he is happy and doing great. A good opportunity to talk about what CH is and the importance of vaccines and spaying/neutering.

The foster babies that Peggy is caring for are here for the morning, same as they were on Thursday. But, this trip, Morgan David will be staying. He's ready for some rough and tumble playing! Won't be long until the whole group will be back to stay at FFRC.  As of today, they all have their first distemper vaccines and their Bordatella vaccine. She will still keep for another week or so: Tara, Dutchy, A

We had BOXES last night. We are very grateful for your support!
Tabbycat--10 gallons of vinegar
Jobo and Mom/Lemon--case of canned Friskies
Plee--a few dozen of wonderful handmade pillowcases

Rebecca/jackersgirl--donation to FFRC
Cavallo's Critter Care--donation to FFRC
Mike D from AZ--donation to FFRC
Julianne B from CA--donation for Miss Coralie

Debonair--that's the real definition of Derecho! It means: suave, confident, charming, gracious, gentlemanly, dashing--Our Debonair, DMan Derecho.

Fancy is doing great. She sometimes is in the back Thumper's Room, sometimes in the Main Area--a real sweetie and is overcoming her initial "grumpiness".  She is also learning that it's fun to play with the other kittens.

The farmyard is getting a makeover! All the sheds now have their new paint coat on them (all are tan). The odd wood pens out there are now also painted and look like new. Sheds are all cleaned out and are tidied up. The linen shed is wonderful--all organized and so easy to see what's in there now! This is used for all areas, but mainly the Covies, Porchies and Barnies. This morning, Anthony had 2 young boys (grandkids of Mary Brain, our volunteer) trailing him--he was teaching them about farmwork.

Valeta's kitties are out and about! What a lot of energy they give to the already busy place! We let them out a couple times a day They still need to go back in their room for naps and bedtime. It's amazing the difference from yesterday to today--their confidence level is already building. And they are also starting to eat a bit more by themselves. Their mama, Valeta is truly one of the nicest, sweetest mamas we've ever had.

Valeta's babies have names!
Rez--Siamese, lightest color, medium length fur, male
Panda--white with grey ears and tail, female
Gandolf--grey tiger, male
Tia--Siamese, darker, female
Tio--Siamese, darker, male

Here's a few ways to make your cat happy!
Provide windows, sills and bird feeders to watch.
Snuggle on the bed or couch with your cat.
Talk to your cat---really.
Praise your cat gloriously and let him soak it up.
Playtime with you.
And a soft leggydew/biggeydew to snuggle on!

Good news on Anne Shirley, Triumph and Hark---they love their new big house! Sometimes they're together, sometimes they're all over the house separately! Sounds like life is good for them there.

We had two adoptions yesterday. Induna went with a young lady, who seems very devoted to her. Marckel left for his new home too. Two great homes with good people.

We have a new cat--one that arrived Tuesday morning. A long hair grey kitten, female with a birthday of 5/19/15. Her name is Fancy. This little one had fleas and was told to us that she would be dumped at the end of the driveway if we didn't take her. Not a very kind thing to say. She's a beauty and ever so sweet. She's now down on the floor of the back Thumper's Room with Lewes and Froggy. Lewes has forgotten what he was told--to take it easy on his back leg, not to climb too much or run. That went in one ear and right out the other! He is doing wonderful. His leg looks strong, or at least what I can see as he goes zooming by!

Fawn, the newest, little muted calico kitten, has made friends with Valeta's babies. They spent the day and night together. This morning, for the first time, the door to Cat's Corner Room is open. The babies are slowly coming out. First one to come out was Fawn. She's showing them the way! The little white/black ear, tail girl seems to be brave. They will get their names very soon now.

It won't be long until Jupiter and Dude will be leaving us. Ashlyn's fiance, Josh can now move into his new house! And he will be taking the boys with him. He will also be taking a new brother with them. It's Rochester! Yes, our little boy will join the boys in their new home. His new name will be Rodchester.

People have asked how to tell the difference of India and Gentry. Both are about the same size. India has longer ears and a longer muzzle, while Gentry is more "rounded". Also, if you are here--just feel the tip of the tail. India has a crook at the end!

Elsie is doing great. Her eyes are cloudy and probably always will be somewhat. But, that girl can still see some things--she's a climber and a toy player! She's a happy girl! Sindile is one handsome boy. He just melts in your arms. Such a sweet one. We are holding Sophie alot. She tends to be skittish, but once we have her, she relaxes and purrs and will look right at us.

Tuesday PM, August 18

All the surgeries from Saturday are doing wonderful. It's simply amazing how they just bounce back so quickly. Right now in the back room, we only have Froggie, Lewes and Sea Turtle. Froggie has been spending more and more time here in the Main Area. All the kittens that are newly up here in the Main Area are doing real good. Today the kittens of Valeta's had their first vaccine (bordatella) so it won't be long until they will be out for short excursions.

Lewes had his sutures removed yesterday. Dr. Darcy said his femoral head is healing nicely and that he can now be out on the floor. He sure is a cutie and is doing great. Sea Turtle ventures up into the front Thumper's Room quite often now.

We had 3 adoptions today! Ann Shirley and her brother Triumph and their friend Hark went to the same home. The home they now have is very good size---lots of running space and a great view of the bird feeding stations. I think they will be quite happy there together! Within the week, we should also have a few more adoptions!

We of course, will also have consolation prizes! Come join the fun. Every penny we received is always 100% appreciated and used wisely.

Gustave's paw continues to knuckle under, so he again has a splint on it (at least when he doesn't pull it off!). We'll hope for the best for his little paw. Morgan David's wound on his neck is all healed. Charleston has fit right in. He is such a loverbug--he even drools when he is being held. He gets along great with everyone. Coralie has been seen napping with a few kittens lately!

Franklin is doing awesome. He loves to play with the feathery toys! Give Milo a ping pong ball and he'll chase that all over the office. Derecho is doing great also--his back is feeling good. He's such a friend to everyone. Elsie's eyes are healing but will probably always have some scarring. She doesn't mind---she still runs everywhere and plays with all the kittens!

The Covies are doing great. I saw August run from the far corner of the Playground clear up to the front porch without one stumble! Jackson was trying to climb a tree---he didn't get too far, but he looked pretty happy about it! Barkey and Markie are happy, happy cats. They love all their space to play in. Our new boy Victor has settled in nicely.

Rena is now letting us pet her. It's only taken a couple months, but she's decided that people are fun now. I saw Middy today--he looks good and came to the feeding station. All is well. They are all doing good in this heat.

Here's what our FFRCNation Friends mean: F--fight for you. R--respect you. I--include you. E--encourage you. N--need you. D--deserve you. S--Stand by you. Thanks to our wonderful friends!

Surgeries today went well. The boys that were done were: Fredo, Paul, Phillip, Rios, Sindile, Marlow and Gentry. We did not do Gustave as he appeared to have a tiny sore throat.  The girls that we did were Valeta (yes, she can and is continuing to nurse her babies), Sophie, Mosaic and Jinkee. All their physicals were good. We also did 2 other surgeries--a spay and a neuter, for a volunteer's outside cats.

Other physicals were:
Froggy--wow, has he grown. He is doing good.
Charleston--Dr. Darcy agrees that he is a cat with CH.  Physical good. Such a sweet boy.
Lewes--Dr. Darcy did his femoral head fracture repair. She feels it's mended enough to let him out now to play in the back Thumper's Room.
Kay Martina & Zeke--my 2 cats in the house. Zeke needs a dental (already scheduled for Friday). It's thought that Kay Martina may have a mass in her mouth--will need to watch.

And then there's Audra Elaine. Not so good news there. Audra has lost the battle of life and has now passed over to the Rainbow Bridge. Yesterday and this morning, she really wasn't too interested in eating. This morning when I weighed her, she had lost another ounce. Not a good thing. She was so emaciated. We knew she had 3 bad teeth. The problem is that to remove those 3 teeth would require an anesthetic. Emaciated cats and anesthetics do not go good together. It was also thought by Dr. Darcy that she may have a lung mass and/or a heart problem. This is a cat that I so wish I knew what her past was. Why was she out all winter, enough for frostbite? Why was she so so thin? Obviously she had been given much love somewhere. We already had her scheduled to have a chest x-ray on Monday to check her heart and lungs. During the last surgery, she started her decline. Shortly after all surgeries were done, she passed away while being held close, as she liked that. Brittany, her initial rescue person had given her 10 days of love before her arrival here. We had her almost a week and filled her with much love and doted on her every whim. She was so sweet, so kind and such a joy to all of us. This has been a very hard week. But, we will continue on with what we do. No one said rescue work is easy. We know that.We also know that love is here, within our walls. And we will continue on with that. Never ever think that time and love given is wasted. Give with your heart--love is a renewable. It's a wonderful thing. Every life is to be cherished. Thank you for sending your love to her---I know she felt that FFRCNation's great capacity to love.

Weds. August 12

This coming Saturday is our surgery day. It's not a super busy day, but will accomplish much. So far, we have scheduled:
Boys---
Fredo  #2.14,  Paul #2.12,  Phillip #2.11,  Rios #2.11,  Sindile #2.05,  Gustave #3.02,  Marlow #2.05,   Gentry #3.13.
Girls---Veleta?? #8.07, Sophie #3.01,  Mosaic #2.04,  Jinkee #2.01.
Physicals:  My Kay Martina needs a check up. Froggy will be looked at and our new girl Audra Elaine will have a physical.

The good news is Audra Elaine's weight: it's went from 4.12 to 4.11 and now to 4.14.  So, she is on the good side of gaining! She went to Dr. P's on Monday for a full lab work. All is fine, except her T4 is a bit off.  Dr. Darcy and I will talk about that on Saturday. In the meantime, she has a fair to good appetite. Sometimes she gobbles right up, sometimes she doesn't. The important thing is that she is gaining weight now. I am especially interested in having her mouth checked. She has only a very few teeth left, but they do seem to be bothering her.

We have a new kitten that has been planned for, from last week. This little medium hair black boy arrived there after being found alongside the road. He was picked up and relinquished to Dr. P's office. The little guy's already had surgery to repair a badly fractured femor head. His name is Lewes, pronounced Loo-Us and is a Name a Cat name. He's about 9 1/2 weeks old. His birthday is 6/4/15. He's just a real sweetie that had a rocky start. He's still on cage-rest---don't want him to move about too much because of the severity of the fracture. Lewes is a handsome boy and is cuddly.

Today has been a very hard day for my family and for myself. We lost our beloved horse, Wilson. He's had many problems lately with his hind legs and recently we have not been able to ride him. That was alright with us--we love him for just being our horse. This morning things escalated and he passed away early this afternoon. Many of our family stayed with him the whole time, comforting him and telling him he was much loved. He was our clown horse--always licking us and doing goofy things. I will miss him greatly. For those of you who had met Wilson, think of him with a smile.

I would like to briefly mention something. One of the very hardest part of rescue is not having enough room for all the cats and kittens that need to come in. Most days we take 25-35 phone calls asking us to take in more cats/kittens. We are right now working at full capacity. We do not euthanize to make room for more incomings. We do try and extend ourselves if there's a particular cat in need and doesn't have anyone to care for it. Many calls that we get do have a person who is at least caring for the cat they have found and for that, we are grateful. We fall far short of being able to take in as many as would like to come in. But, we try our best. Please.....don't criticize us when we have to say no.  Don't think we don't care.....we do, with a passion. But, it's utterly impossible for one Rescue Center to accommodate all those that need help. Sometimes I feel double-whammied---first by not being able to help all the cats that we get calls for and then by worrying about what will happen to them. And also it's hard when people don't understand that there's no magical button to extend walls to accommodate "just one more".   Dr. P taught me long ago though---we can only do what we can do. So, we try our best and we love them all. But the great thing about all of this is, YOU can all help the situation. Please, please....reach out and spay and neuter. Even just ONE spay/neuter makes a big difference.  Thank you.

August 9, Sunday

We have had such beautiful days! Fairly low humidity, blue skies, warm temps, not too hot! The Barnies, Covies and Porchies love it--they've been running all around, playing. Some of them just plop down in the grass and sleep wherever they're at! One of the Barnies, Kerry has decided it's fun to follow the horses. They seem to like him! The kitties and cats inside are also enjoying the sun coming in thru the windows. Lots of napping in the sunspots!

We have a new Covie. His name is Victor. He's a brown tiger, looks alot like Markie and Barkey. He is 3 years old and is an outside cat. His family is moving out of state and cannot take him with them. These are the folks that also brought us Leonard! Victor is a great cat-very sweet and friendly. He is fitting right in!

We had BOXES on Friday evening. Please know that you are appreciated!
Debbie/lostgirl from NJ--6 boxes of 12 packs cheese it snacks for the vols., coupons

Can you remember more names?! We have new cats with new names!

Marlow and Jinkee---they arrived from Dr. P's office. Marlow is a handsome buff boy, who is super ornery and sweet as can be. Jinkee is a shyer boy, brown tiger with an extra cute face. They are not true brothers but have the same birthday of 5/14/15.

Gentry--black boy, with a little bit of white at throat and on tummy. Gentry was found about a week ago in Defiance and kept for 4-5 days. The "founder" noticed a progressive clumsiness about him and so brought him here. His clumsiness/falling over did show itself the first day but has now steadily gotten better.  We will keep an eye on things. His birthday is 5/8/15.

Charleston--brown tiger, found in Defiance, about a year old. He was very hungry, super thirsty, had fleas. His tail has had a past fracture which makes it veer off to the side. He also has a very sore toenail. He appears to be a moderate CH cat, but we will wait for a confirmation on that from our vet. A very nice, sweet boy. His birthday is 8/2/14.

Audra Elaine--now, here's an extra sweet, extra special girl. A friend of FFRC found her about 2 weeks ago. And they took her to the vet's--this is so nice to hear when people bring in a cat and they've already taken them to a vet! She's a very old girl--age to be determined on Saturday, but I'm betting she's an oldster.  Most of her teeth are gone. She weighs 4.08--very very thin. Her bones are so prominent. But, she has an appetite----as long as you plop a little baby food on top of the food! She has a face that reminds us of Magenta. Her coloring is very unusual---black/white and her entire back is Cinnamon color--very pretty.

This coming Saturday is our surgery day. Later this week we will work up the surgery list and get the weights. We will also have a few extra physicals that will need to be done.

Trucker is still at an A+ for poo control! There are still some days when you can tell he's not 100%, but by far, he's having great days! I love how he and Magic are bestest of friends. And they stick together at night time. Bella continues spending most of her days out in the kennel with the dogs! She loves it. If you try to persuade her not to go out, she will very very strongly tell you that she indeed DOES want to go out! Seymour still likes the front office with Joyful and Joline. Three beautiful cats.

I want to extend a special thank you to Mich & Vern for coming to FFRC and doing a major Flash Sale for us. This money that was raised by yesterday's Flash Sale will help us tremendously with our operational costs. I so appreciate their kindness, giving of their time and for the fun that they make these Flash Sales.

We are kitten overloadeth.  We also have names! First, we took in 3 new kittens.
Elsie is a grey/white female kitten, arrived at 5 1/2 weeks old, with much damage done to both eyes from a virus. She was found by herself. Her birthday is 6/27/15. Right now she cannot see out of either eye, but we're working on better eye health with eye ointment and oral antibiotics.
Tara and Dutchy are sister siblings, just brought in last night. They were found by Julie, a volunteer, so tiny yet all alone outside. They are 4 1/2 weeks old. Their birthday is 7/5/15.

You've already been introduced to these 3 kittens, but they too now have names!
Morgan Daniel is our cuterebra kitten. He's a brown tiger, arrived when he was 4 1/2 weeks old. His birthday is 7/30/15. He is doing awesome. Barely can see the wound on his neck anymore.
Squeeky is the full calico, with a little tiger mixed in. She arrived too at 4 1/2 weeks. Her birthday is 4/29/15. She is doing great. She's the one that walks around meowing/squeeking!
Snookie is the white calico. She arrived at 3 1/2 weeks old. Her birthday is 7/6/15.  She was also found all by herself alongside a road. She's struggling a bit--actually lost weight. I think today we're making a little headway though.

All the above names are from the Name a Cat names.

Amani is a gorgeous kitten--so sleek, so shiny and ever so sweet. Cayden is walking with much confidence now. He loves to play! Rapture is beautiful--her fluffy fur is so so pretty. Trucker continues to do well. His poo statue:  excellent! Still so thankful for this!  Paul and Phillip are two sweetie kitties. They both have spotty dotties--very handsome babies.

Just in case you notice Vernon and Seymour's tails--yes, they each have a bit of fur clipped off. Both apparently received a scratch or bite on their tails. Probably happened on Tuesday. Nothing serious, but clipping the fur allows for air flow and for us to clean the areas thoroughly. They are both on antibiotics. No worries!

What goes hand in hand with rescue work?  Everyone knows this---it's spaying and neutering, of course! We are working on a big project here at FFRC. Still working on the details. As soon as things are more concrete, will fill you in! It'll be after August 15 that we know more details! Exciting!

Monday, August 3

Okay---so I panicked  Twice yesterday I counted the Porchies, the Fire Cats and the Barnies. I kept coming up short. I was missing 1 Barnie, 1 Fire Cat and 7 Porchies. Where could they be?  Steve went and checked the back of the farm property and the backwater---no cats.  I checked the main farm property, across the road and all the sheds. By near-nighttime I was worried---where could they all be?  I know it was very hot yesterday and very humid. Just worry, worry, worry.  I decided one more trip outside to check. Here comes Mew, right behind was Whiskers. I sat down to pet them and up came Olaf. Then I saw JJ coming out of the woods. And there was Gwendolyn too. Walking to the Fire Cat area, I then saw Blake. They all ended up being accounted for. We have extra smart cats---they must've all taken cover in the cool woods for the day! All is well, all are safe and all ate a good breakfast this morning!

This morning has been busy. After breakfast we did treatments, made up more gruel and refilled the flea prevention basket. The Porchies and Barnies got their monthly flea prevention. The Covies will get theirs later today.

Today is a special day. Steve, two daughters and a granddaughter and I are going to have some fun! We are going to Cabela's -- a store we will all enjoy! It's a camping, hunting, fishing store and mighty big! So, I'll see you all later today

Froggy was up in the Main Area a bit today. That boy is amazing. We put him in the litterbox periodically during the day--rarely does he miss. He's a good eater too---a bit messy, but then....he's a boy!  lol   He loves to play and makes friends with the other cats. And he's growing!

The main purpose of this blog is to give you an update on Grizzle.  It's been a very very tough weekend. A weekend that our vet has been helping us with, to keep Grizzle going. Saturday morning I noticed his head had grown quite a bit over night.and that he wasn't feeling so good. At that time, we only had 1 dose of his meds in him. He received his second dose of meds. But during the day Saturday, his head continued to swell. After talking to Dr. Darcy, it was decided we would have to give a diuretic. This is something we didn't want to do---it's hard on a young one's kidneys, but at that point, we had no choice. He could no longer stand or walk or swallow. He was going down hill fast. And his poor head--so much bigger and mis-shaped. The diuretic started working and he peed alot and even then some more. We also had to work so he wouldn't get dehydrated since he couldn't swallow, as he was so weak. He was also experiencing pain--this is a big no-no here. We don't want any pain to any of our cats. Because of his smallness and problems, we started with small amounts of pain meds. And it worked! It was noticeable the difference in him. Saturday night I was able to also syringe him a bit but he was still obviously very weak, but alive. Sunday morning his head was back down to the size it was Friday when he arrived. It swelled a tiny bit more Sunday morning. By this time he had more meds on board and the swelling stopped. We continued the pain meds though as it was needed. Last night, he was hungry! He let me syringe feed him a whole meal. Then he napped and slept a sleep that was comfortable. Late last night when he woke up, he was hungry again and ate half of another meal all  by himself. This morning he started walking around, clumsy as he was, it was wonderful to see! So, he is now back in the Back Thumper's Room. Even though I will be gone today, we have eagle-eyes on him and he is being cared for.

Our vet has been conferring with a vet neurologist in Michigan who is very familiar with pet hydrocephalus. This particular vet is the one who will do his future surgery. We won't know all the details on this until later. This is the vet who has started us on the correct meds for Grizzle, under Dr. Darcy's supervision. Tomorrow, Grizzle will have his ultrasound. There will be another conference with the MI. vet today. Please keep Grizzle in your good thoughts and prayers. He's a terrific kitten, obviously with a huge will to survive.

August 1 Saturday

Happy August! 6 weeks until Catstock! Enjoy your summer---it's going quickly!

Right now there are 5 kittens inside the open door of Dodger's Pen, playing. Much wrestling, jumping and bamming going on! It's Peter, AJ, Jazara, Mycroft and Rios.  What a group of ornery kitties. I have a sleepy bunch with me--Kazumi, Fredo and Towanda. All stretched out, they take quite a bit of room. And then I have little Grizzle on my lap.

Yes, Grizzle arrived yesterday afternoon. He's our grey tiger, 4 month old boy that has hydrocephalus. He came from a foster person in Ohio. In short, hydrocephalus is a congenital or acquired accumulation of excessive fluid in the ventricular system of the brain. This simply means "water on the brain". It is a build up of fluid inside the skull.  This accumulation puts pressure on the brain. Last week, Grizzle saw a vet twice. He was feeling a bit punky mid week, but well enough to travel here. Our vet will see him Tuesday for a ultrasound. In the meantime, he is already on meds to help. One is an anti-inflammatory. The other is a proton pump inhibitor and helps lower the fluid production on the brain. Today, I feel Grizzle is still a bit punky. We will know lots more answers in the next week.

We had BOXES last night. We are so very grateful for your support.
Anonymous--40 lb. Precious Cat Litter and 2 cases of can food
Donia/wickedwings--visitor last week--baby meat food

Deb11111--donatin to sponsor the Paddy boys

Our Paddy Cakes and Paddy Purr are now 5 years old. They were treated several times yesterday with special snackers and Appetizers. They didn't want to share yesterday, but I'm sure today, they will! Two special boys! They arrived with their mama when they were just 1 day old.

We also had BOXES on Thursday evening---many many thanks!
LostGirl--Big box of Prizes for Catstock--toys, charms, tattoos, keychains--fun stuff!
Moomagoo/Sally from OK--hand made Mardi Gras masks---very beautiful, big bath towel

Julie & David--For Trucker--case of Royal Canin Intestinal can food
Billie K--pet gear Pet Ramp--very nice
Mike/sophieandlucysdad from MI--lots of coupons
Daria F from Defiance--donation in memory of Wm. Runyan

The 3 newest kittens, white calico, calico and brown tiger are all doing well. We have them all together. The brown tiger (that had the cuterebra) is doing wonderful. His "pocket" is healing already. They have formed a friendship! Names will be done soon!

Our foster mama, Peggy S, has 3 kittens at the moment. One is Lily Rose, the tiger/torti with the protruding eye. I've already removed two "caps" from it. Peggy is keeping ointment on/in both eyes. The other 2 kittens that she has are Sophie and Mosaic. Sophie has the injured rear leg, is still on antibiotics and looks like we may get much healing. Mosaic is the one that came in that Lisa found, all soggy wet. Mosaic and Sophie are rather shy, so Peggy is helping them with that.

Remember Bows that was adopted? She spent the day here yesterday while her mama was away for the day. After about 5 minutes, she joined right in and played all day long. She has a wonderful home. Sherri, who adopted Radiance, just loves her so much. Sounds like Radiance will come a-running anytime she is called! I love these good homes.

Now there are 6 kittens playing in Dodger's Pen. Cyrus has joined in on the fun. Now I'm down to 2 on my desk!

Trucker continues to do well. Did you ever think we'd see the time that he would have good poo? He's amazing. He takes all of his meds just fine. 95% of his poo has been "normal" since we started this new med regimen. I'm thrilled and I know he is happier too!

We had a great thing this week! Rena (Lena's twin that is outside) is letting us pet her! She has been prancing around us for weeks. Now, if we go slow and reach out, she'll stop, roll over and show her tummy! It's wonderful! Magic is following Steve, playing with his untied shoelaces!

Barkey and Markie are doing wonderful in the Playground. They are happy and using their energies to have fun! I've had so many comments too on August, Jersey and Jackson---how relaxed and happy they seem. It's wonderful to be there with them.

Valeta's babies are doing great. Their fur is growing. So so cute. The 2 foster babies still remind me of being part Himalayan. A very sweet 5-group of babies. They are just starting to toddle about. She's an awesome mama.

Take care and enjoy this beautiful weekend! And now there's 3 kittens in Dodger's Pen and 5 on my desk!
