Monday, Feb. 27, 2017

In a few short 21 days, Spring will officially be upon us! Our weather this winter has fluctuated so much between very cold, light snow to actual warm springish air. Our maple trees have buds on them and the chickens have already increased their egg laying. The peacocks are in full feather glory.

I am so grateful for you all in helping FFRC in so many different ways.
Pat C, volunteer--2 boxes litter, can food & snackers, 3 ear warmers (for PawMart)
Nona from NY--funds to help us establish some grass pools for Bella's Place this spring. The cats will love this!
Needtoretire--donation to help with our spay/neuter fund
Kelly L--donation to FFRC

I want to personally thank you for your help in celebrating my mom's 93rd birthday. The mods have so nicely "put it out there" that if you'd like to do something for mom's birthday, to donate $5 for chicken snackers for the cats! As of this minute, she has received $590 for this! Mostly in 5's!  On Tuesday when she turns 93, I will tell her all about this. It will please her to know she has helped the cats! Thank you!

We had 2 adoptions this weekend! First to go was Polly, our CH cat that came from Puerto Rico. Her new mama loves her so much--the bond was already started before she was actually adopted. Her mama has sent pictures showing a very happy Polly. She likes the couch and checking things out the window.  Makes me happy to know she's in such a great home.

And Cricket was adopted yesterday to our friend Donia. Before she and Noah left FFRC, Cricket was already very much Noah's boy. Her other two FFRC cats Juby and Saffron have already met and befriended Cricket. Another good adoption.

Katharine came out today and was in the Main Area! She is so very sweet. She also has decided she sure likes our FFRC food and ate a very hearty breakfast. Hensley who has lost some weight recently has had a surge on his appetite too. It was nice to see him eat 2 breakfasts! Pania still loves her Bonito flakes in the mornings. Joyful too was in the Main Area quite a bit today. Seems so much like she is enjoying being out in the action. Coralie and Merri still go in their cabinets almost every morning after their breakfast--it's nap time then!

Our new boy Arley is quite at home already. He has quickly made friends and has investigated every inch of the Rescue Center.  Tabitha was curled up in her paper towel cabinet napping this weekend. Anayaa too is fully an FFRC cat now---is so very comfortable and is eating much better. She knows what to do when she wants another plate of food---she does the Anayaa stare and then the meow! We are at her service!

Jones and Sea Turtle are both doing wonderful. They've had a few down times this winter but for the most part, they are feeling good and happy.  The Covies, Firecats, Porchies and Barnies had a special treat of turkey this morning---they gobbled it right up.  They all look real good.

Our washer/dryer are doing good.  It did take us a bit of time at the beginning to figure out how to make them work efficiently. We have it pretty down-pat now. They are very different than a normal washer and dryer.  The dispenser that puts in the soap and disinfectant is also working good.

Thanks to all of you who go thru ffrcrescue.org (our website) to order your Amazon products. We just received a payment of $551.12 for FFRC. This is like FREE money to us! Much appreciated---February and March are our two hardest months to keep up with the bills.

This week we have three cats going to the vet's office. Anayaa and LaRue go on Weds. Both of these cats need a dental with teeth extractions. Then on Friday, Olivia goes for her nasal surgery.  They will also check her heart out. Olivia's energy level is good. I do believe her heart irregularity will be gone after she is able to breathe easier. That is our goal.

The kittens and cats are all doing fine. Happy felines! have a wonderful Monday!

Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017

We took in a new cat yesterday.  He's a gold/white male about 10 months old. His birthday is 4/17/17. He arrived a bit thin and with a fairly good size bite wound on his back.  We clipped the area, cleaned it and started him on antibiotics and soreness meds.  Already today healing is taking place. New name is coming! He's a nice boy and sure seems happy already. Won't be long until he's out cruising and playing with the others!

We had BOXES last night. We so love boxes and are grateful!
KnittinKitten--case of 12 cans KMR
Gusti--for August, Lucas & friends--3 Yeoooww Bananas, 4 tubs of snackers.  Also cookies fo Millie, Maverick & Merci. 12 tubs of Clorox wipes
Mich & Vern--CATATHON--puzzle
Mary, Fri. vol--5 gallons bleach.  For CATATHON--2 piece luggage set, cute pink kitty purse, black kitty puppet

We had a fantastic 3-some adoption a few days ago. I waited to let you know because I wanted to make sure all was well.  A lady who lives in our county, just moved from out of state. She use to do shy kitten fostering for a shelter. Now that she's settled here, she wanted her very own kittens/cats. And she was willing to take on shy ones. So....little Theodore and Ethyl went home with her. But before that happened, she also asked for an adult who had a mothery personality to help her with Theodore and Ethyl. My first thought was........Chloe! She's always been a kitten mama!  After being in her home now a few days, all is well and happy. Kittens are settling in nicely and Chloe has discovered the comfort of the couch and chairs!

We had also taken in a female cat named Tigger about 3 weeks ago. Because she does not like other cats being too close, we simply kept her in the back Thumper's Room all these weeks.  We had her spayed last week and found her a home 4 days ago. She went to a quiet home, no other pets and a big screened in connected porch. I've already heard from her and all is good---very relaxed and still loves her head scratches! A good thing for Tigger where she is happy and loved.

All is good.  We were suppose to have gotten a rather nasty storm last night but it really only amounted to some wind and rain--nothing too drastic. All the cats are accounted for outside at breakfast time! Millie the donkey has an abscess in her rear foot from a lodged stone. We are treating her daily and she seems to be improving.

My computer is broken. So sad about that. Apparently in the electric flicker two nights ago, my UPS didn't keep things in line so the computer went down. Hoping to get it fixed today. So, if I'm a bit slow at getting back to anyone, that is why. (I'm borrowing Lynnette's computer for little bits at a time.)  So, this blog will be short!  Take care to everyone. Lots of colds and flu still going around. The cats are healthy and all doing great though!

Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017

Another day of 50's and 60's.  While it is so nice, I know that with the longer daylight hours and warmer temps, cats are going into heat.  Please......won't you help?  If you have a cat not neutered or spayed, please do so as soon as possible.  It is so much easier to take care of 1-2 cats then wait till fall when you may have 20 or 30 some.

We have added another HumaneOhio surgery date---it is 3/28. We will then have 3 surgery dates for March--two with HumaneOhio and one with  FFRC.

We had BOXES last night--we are so grateful for the support given to FFRC.
Brooke--6 Yeoowwww bananas--some are already being enjoyed by the cats!
RoBotMan--3 hars of Janes Multi Use Seasoning to try--Steve will have fun!
Vicki B--6 bags of Roy Canin Baby Cat/Mother
Mayumi--FFRC's Tokyo Branch--gift for mom for BD (many thanks!), case of Bonitor steaks & 2 tubs of Tulle. The cats send their thanks!
Kathy/Justme--14 boxes of Bondi Licks--another favorite
Sev--fruit phone dust plugs
Sue/macandcheese&doodlesmom--Heart card with donation
Cheryl L from WA--coupons
Elaine & Alan from FL--kitty card with donation in memory of LittleKat and a card with note for the LaChat Family with a donation in their honor! (I shared the card with them!)
Dewitty--card, 2 plush kitty beds, mirrored suncatcher for Kabana, well wisher cards with stamps, 3 lg bags snackers & 2 tubs of snackers, special treats for Alma, Sea Turtle, Octavia & 6 hand towels

An extra big thanks to Leggygal--our suppler of Leggydews and Biggiedews!  We received 5 boxes of these precious blankies. Also a box of the adoption bags with the drawstring tops--so nice to put all the goodies in these for adoptions! Many thanks to Leggygal--we will show these items on the cam at different times!

Also thanks to:
Keiko--a donation for Alma's birthday for chicken! I'm sure she will share.
Sven S from Germany--donation to FFRC
Clark, Jessie & the rest of the cat family--donation in honor of Alma--chicken $5!

We had our Mich and Vern Flash Sale Tuesday--I am so very grateful to these two wonderful people to come all the way here to "do their thing"--they are the Flash Sale experts! Many thanks too to all the people who provided the items for the sale, the purchasers of these items,  the viewers and the moderators for making this a success.  This sale brought in a much needed $1703. I am so thankful.  February and March are hard months for FFRC financially. This will help us get to those bills.

Alice Mary had a bubble bath this morning.  At this very moment, she looks clean! No guarantees though after she eats! She ate really good yesterday. Katharine is coming along. Each day I can see that she is relaxing and checking us all out. She is also becoming more adventurous about roaming around---a very different world for her here. I think she will settle in nicely. Olivia is doing great. She was so fun to watch yesterday! She spent so much time just running and running! It must've felt so good to her! She is quickly feeling at home. Today we will see when Olivia's nasal surgery is. She does have some heart irregularities right now but Dr. Darcy feels that is from her very narrow passageways. As soon as this is corrected, it should also correct that irregularity.  The krackles in her throat area too are associated with her nasal passageway and so too should be fine after surgery.

We had an adoption on Tuesday. Sweet Harvey went to his new home. His new mama has lots of time and love to give him--Harvey will so enjoy this. Nothing like your very own home and own person to love!

Lucas went to the Cove on Tuesday. It was obvious that he wanted OUT, OUT, OUT--spending much time at the windows and doorways. He had been an outside cat.  From the moment he went to the Cove, his whole demeanor changed. He's relaxed, happy and completely at home there. It's so nice to see this. The other Covies act like he's always been there.

It's obvious the cats know the weather is changing! When we leave the dogs out in their Bella's Pen, many of the cats that are allowed outside follow them out. This morning there were 6 different cats that went out. This spring we want to put out some big kiddie pools, with dirt and grass for the cats! We might possibly get catnip to grow too.

The purple office room is full of cats--Xiluva, Zelda, Magic, Katharine, Lucy Ann, Farrah, Annabelle,  Polly,  Anayaa, Jessie and Lamula--all are relaxed, awake, grooming or playing and enjoying themselves. We been able to keep most of the windows open which is nice.

Have a wonderful day!

Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017

All the surgery cats have recovered very nicely. It's amazing how they just bounce right back. Livingston's tail looks good. He's getting antibiotic ointment to it daily. Sutures will be removed next week.  Phoebe continues her antibiotic and is ornery, silly and eating great.

Alice Mary is also picking up her appetite (again). Please always disregard her messy face---we clean and clean it but when she plops that flat face into food, it's bound to be messy. We're just thrilled that she is ever so slowly gaining weight.

Cairys and Peanuts are running around here like crazy cats. They don't care at all if they bop into some other cat or furniture.  They just keep on going--chasing each other. Sure looks fun!

I want to say a special thank you to Gusti who provided water, juice and pop for this past weekend. And to Joyce D for providing pizza for Saturday's surgery.  And to Donna for the Birthday Cake in honor of all the volunteer's birthdays for Sunday, at our Annual Meeting.  So very kind of all of you!

We took on a new kitten yesterday--a pure white Persian, 4 months old. Her name is Olivia. She is in need of the nasal surgery that will open her nostrils.  She is a sweetie and will be visiting the vet's soon. Her birthday is 10/15/16.

We are going to let Lucas be a Covie.  Lucas came from the outside, other than the short time the man who mistreated him, had him.  Lucas spends most of his time at the windows or doors, scratching at them and looking outdoors. I sincerely feel he will be much happier outside in the Cove. He's such a great boy but seems to be restless. I do believe his heart is wanting to be that outside boy that he always had been. Since the weather is so very nice, we will take him there sometime today.

Katharine is now in Cat's Corner Room.  She is slowly adjusting. She ate a good breakfast this morning! It will take her time as her complete life style has changed. But, I do believe she will be a happy girl that will enjoy her freedom.  Time always helps.

Our Annual Volunteer Meeting on Sunday was wonderful. It's always so nice to see so many volunteers all together. Attendance was high. They really are the best of the best. THEY are the backbone of this Rescue Center. They have been giving me good ideas, suggestions for FFRC.  It was so nice weather we actually had the meeting under the Shelter House---can't hardly believe we could do that in February!

We didn't have BOXES last night because we had a Board Meeting at 5:00.  Lots of good info going on there too and suggestions!

Today--want to have some fun? We will have a Mich and Vern Flash Sale! 2:00 ish. We have lots of items that are brand new to Flash Sales! Come and join us--even if it's just for the moral support! Thanks so much to Mich, Vern and our mods who help us alot with these Flash Sales. Some of our items are hand made by viewers---big thanks to you too!

"Everyone has inside them a piece of good news. The good news is you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is."   By Anne Frank           Have a great day to everyone!

And then came the LaChat Fun-Raiser! THis was such a great time with the LaChat family--rather eccentric ladies and a whole lot of fun! Hope they come back again sometime! lol  Here's the results from the Gallery Drawing:
Kittens:   46 tickets--$230, JoAnn Bi
Derecho:   69 tickets--$345, Kimkost
Z's:   20 tickets, $100, Kimkost
Trucker:    44 tickets, $220, Donna B
Coralie:    44 tickets, $220, Fran D
Walter:    70 tickets, $350, Tanzagirl
Paddy's:    37 tickets, $185, Schinn
Farrah:    30 tickets--$150, Oilsandsgirl
Mayor Anony:    19 tickets--$95, RoseSF6cats
Pania:    71 tickets--$355, Billie K
Tabitha:    76 tickets--$380, Vaun
Fabio:    81 tickets--$405, Shannon S

This total came to $3,035 which averaged out to $252.90 per portrait! Wow! And then we had another $30 added to that, bringing our total to $3,065.  I'm so happy about this---this will help our Feliz Navidad Fund.

We also had consolation prizes which goes to: Lurker B, Canton, Kathie3103, Napa, Marsha Sth, Zoolove, Judeannlee, Elaine & Alan, Lynn Ra, Phyllis Bar, Jacksmom, Elskates, Knittenkitten, NanaShell, Snoopybaby for HappyFlame.      All of the items will be going out the door on Monday!

And then came Saturday--an extraordinarily busy day.  We accomplished alot, which so pleases me.  It was our FFRC spay/neuter day.  So many people here to help--it was wonderful.

Many thanks to the following for spending their day here helping:  Dr. Darcy, Amber, Lynnette, Sue B, Becky M, Pablo, Gem, Dawn E, Connie S, Hannah and Andrew, Jackie S, Mary Braid.  And then Connie D, Barb and Gregg were in the Rescue Center.

Here's the breakdown from surgery:
Volunteer brought in:   1 spay
Dr. Darcy brought in: 1 spay/1 neuter
Public brought in: 14 neuters
FFRC had: 1 neuter/6 spays

We also sedated Phoebe to check out her throat since she's been "snorting" again. No new polyp but did have thick drainage. She was flushed and cleaned and will be on a treatment. Plus, Livingston did indeed have to have his tail amputated 2 inches--poor buddy. We do not know what happened, other than it was injured Tuesday late afternoon. Now, it can heal. Also, Dr. Darcy did 5 physicals for volunteers cats.

The above came to 16 neuters and 8 spays.  Now, (we need a drumroll!), our new 2017 total is: 48 total spays and 48 total neuters which comes to 96.........so far! We are planning on much, much more!

Dr. Darcy also took a look at Alice Mary. While we are pleased that she has gained a bit of weight, she just isn't "there" yet in her overall health. We have her on a new treatment program. I did actually see her playing this morning!

We took on a new cat on Friday. Her name is Katharine. She is a beautiful muted calico Persian. She is shaved but her fur will grow back so very pretty! She is almost 6 years old. Katharine's birthday is 3/17/11.  We also spayed her yesterday. She loves to be head petted.

To round out this busy weekend, today at 2:00 is our Annual Volunteer Meeting.  This weather is so unbelievably warm. Yesterday our temperature reached 66 degrees which should happen again today! If so, we possibly may have the meeting under the Shelter House---just unbelievable for February!

Even the birds are happy! This morning, I heard what I call The Morning Birds---where they are chirping to welcome the day! A wonderful sound.

Friday, Feb. 17, 2017

Tonight is the night! BOXES at 5:30 and then the fabulous LaChat Gallery drawing on the portraits by the cats. The LaChat family has been generous in donating these to FFRC!  See you this evening for the fun. There will also be consolation prizes! There's a cat-rumor going around that it's possible the LaChat ladies will be here again tonight!

We had BOXES Weds. evening--FFRC is so very thankful!
Zoolove--2 teal flip pans cookware with cookbook to go along with the rest of the set (catathon!)
SVcathy and Mr. SV Scott--2 hand knitted cowl neck warmers--beautiful. Yarn donated by Deb11111.
Lannml--24 rolls of Bounty paper towels
Richard B--5 packs of 3 rolls Sparkle paper towels
Marcia, volunteer--box disposable gloves, 2 packs of 9" styrofoam plates
Clark, Jessie & the gang--Happy Birthday card to JJ & the chicken $5

And more thanks--------
Sharon Y from UK--donation--extra hug for Spiker too!
Pat, Thurs. vol--handwarmers, face towels, 6" plates & snackers
David, Christine and Miyu, Yuki and Anya--donation to use where needed
Lorraine H--donation for FFRC. She adopted a CH kitten after seeing here at FFRC that these special cats live like any other--they need love and a family. Thank you for rescuing your kitty!

If you live in the Defiance area and need a good dog groomer, I would suggest Joy Brandt.  Her number is 419-438-3389. Her grooming business is called For The Love Of Dogs.  Joy is a wonder--compassionate and knows her dog cuts. She has much experience and is so kind to the dogs. She first opened her business here at FFRC and did many dogs! Now she's grown to have a place of her own. Try her--you'll like her and so will your dog!

Tomorrow will be a whirlwind. We will start checking cats in from the public about 7:30. I believe these are our numbers:
From FFRC:  6 spays, 1 neuter
From Public:  1 spay, 15 neuters
From Dr. Darcy: 2-3 spays
Plus we will probably be sedating Phoebe to check her soft palate. She has started "snorting" again.  Need to see what's in that palate before she can be adopted.
We will also possibly be doing surgery on Livingston's tail. Somewhere, on Tuesday, he had his tail injured quite badly. Physicals are also needed on a number of the FFRC cats. We have pizza coming for lunch which will be most welcome. And we have volunteers that will arrive to help Lynnette and myself with check-ins and others to help with post-op watch. Afterall, we keep a very good eye on those that are recovering--very important.

Yesterday, Jay was here from Fort Wayne. He set up the soap/bleach dispenser and program for our new washer. Now, all we have to do is to start the washer and walk away! After the water goes in, you may hear a new sound--it's just that pressure dispenser doing some of the work for us! Nice!

Mark your calendar for next Tuesday, Feb.21 at 2:00 ish.  Mich and Vern will be gracing us with their presence for a Flash Sale! Many new items not seen before! Should be fun!

All is good.  Cats and kittens are healthy. Have a few adoptions in the works. We're preparing for the Volunteer Annual Meeting on Sunday. Treatments are all caught up. Yesterday we were able to get quite a few cats groomed! Won't be long until we take on the Porchies and Covies and get their spring groom in. Hoping the Barnies and Firecats will also let us get them groomed.

Take care. Hope to see you all this evening!

Do you live in or near Cecil, OH?  Do you have a cat that is not neutered or spayed yet?  Check this out---www.neuterscooter.com    They are having another Neuter Scooter day on March 13. You can register for an appointment on this site.  Hurry--spring is fast approaching. And remember those kitties born in March and April can very possibly have kittens themselves in the fall.

Update on our Maybelline.  It hurts me to have to tell you that she passed away.  We are not positive of what virus she came down with---we have no history of her past at all. Whatever it was, it hit her fast and hard. Rest assured we kept her comfortable. Dr. Darcy helped us with the treatment plan. As soon as I realized that something wasn't quite right with her, she was put back in quarantine. She was such a gentle soul girl--I was so wishing a long, happy and healthy life for her. I'm at peace though that she didn't pass away by herself outside, from where she was found. Thank you for caring about her.

Here are the first 5 stories from our famed cat artists:  (Please keep in mind that this is what the fabulous, famous LaChat sisters had to say about each painting, along with daydreams from the FFRC cats!  Read and enjoy---all for fun and the love of cats!

#1     Pania"Tip Tip Tippy Toes" - This amazing sightless Australian artist painted this detailed landscape portraits of trees, mountains and waterfalls with just the tips of her fingers. Pania states that she feels the different color by the texture of the paints. Her colors blend from bright vibrant colors on one side of the canvas to earthy naturalistic colors on the other side with a fluid tendency.  Thus reflecting the transaction from land to water and additionally, day to night. She mastered this brushless painting method after losing the sight in both of her eyes, due to an at-home hot waxing body treatment gone bad. Pania has had to sell some of her most beloved pictures just to pay her $350 medical expense to remove her bad eye.

#2     Kittens – “Whiskers on Kittens” – This watercolor was done by a vast variety of delightful charismatic little kitties. Their pleasant mood is evident by the constant  movements and changing of colors. Look at how the elements in this painting are arranged and the relationship between the different parts and how your eyes move around the composition. Absolutely magnificent!! This motion reflects the enchanting delicious environment that the kitties all live in and replicate their love of life.  It is not a coincidence that all of these particular artists started their lives at FFRC. This wonderful institute takes pride in producing only the very best artists. They want to ensured a long, happy, healthy, productive life of painting. They do this by providing each new participant with free medical care. But this service doesn’t come at a small price. Each new student incurred a base medical portfolio which consists of an evaluation, medication and several relaxing soaking baths, all this at a minimum cost of $350 each. This shared origin only adds to the charm of this painting!

#3     Derecho – “SUN RISE, SUN SET” – As you can see Derecho was going thru a mellow period in his life when he painted this glorious picture. See how the muted colors flow dramatically from one color to the other? IT’S BREATH TAKING ISN’T IT?  No kitty has ever passed through FFRC without spending time cuddling up to Uncle Derecho! However, I got it from a dreadfully reliable source that when Uncle D came to FFRC, he had been hanging with a – shall we say - unsavory group of thug kitties. His coat looked dreadful! He was immediately treated with a Capstar and then given several luscious soaking baths and medicated for those horrible nasty little flea creatures. His past still haunts him and to this day, he still must dish out in excess of $95 each year just to keep those reached pests away.  Just thinking about that whole dreadful bodily infestation thing makes me itch!

#4     Z’s – “I Z U”- This painting was donated by our neighbors who live in a nudist colony, called Hanging Gardens. The identity of the exact artist is not known, but it is quite obvious that he or she is quite talented and a gentle sole! Look at those delicate strokes and the strong contrasting colors! These create an unmistakable entertaining focal point. The funds from this stunning picture will be use exclusively for medication for skin care. Our very own FFRC spends $1900 per outbreak each time that a nasty little fungus makes its way into the rescue center. And trust me those naked neighboring Z’s understand about skin conditions. Several months ago during an extremely sunny and hot period, they all decided to forgo the suntan lotion during a friendly weekend beach volleyball tournament. Ouch Darlings! I mean OUCH!!

#5     Trucker“Keep on Truckin” – Trucker has a unique painting style, it’s called Body Painting. This particular method is quite controversial in the more established artistic communities. But Trucker has captured the glorious intense colors of his true inner spirit by using his entire body to express his reaction to today’s worldly conflicts. The beautiful upward strokes show his hope, but the downward blurred muted tints indicate a spiraling attitude. A freak accident in his early childhood involving an attack of a flock of crazed pigeons left Trucker on the verge of death and without his hind legs. The injuries were severe leaving him questioning whether he'd ever be able to paint again. But after extensive reconstructive surgery totaled well over $1400, Trucker has become one of the world’s most influential artist using the unique bold style of Body Painting

#6     Coralie– “What’s New Pussy Cat?” Coralie is such a talented young artist. Her paintings reflect her own life; powerful and yet timid, distressed yet joyful. Notice the uneven curvaceous strokes?! And  how the colors blend perfectly together as does the two aspects of Coralie’s personal. Her’s is such sad story, during the day, she is a meek and shy accountant, but at night, she becomes a orange tiger. “Kissy Face” as she is known at the Pussy Cat Lounge, waits tables for tips (and fun!). She also has a dirty little secret that we read about in the tabloids.…the truth is, she was never spayed due to the extraordinarily high cost of $217 for a complete spay procedure from a reputable veterinarian. The article goes on to say that at one time she has actually contemplated seeking a cheaper procedure from a back alley clinics, but chooses not to take that chance. She was quoted as saying that at any time she has 5 litters of kitties at home. To make matters worse, some of those babies are have litters of their own. In a matter of 7 years between Kissy Face and her kitties, they could have…Oh my!!...they could have over 420,000 babies.  Darling, you need to do something about that right now!

#7     Walter – “Visions of The Mother Ship” – Walter is a “special” artist! Walter likes to refer to himself as “The Ruler of the World Beyond”. Walter, oh excuse me, The Rule, visualizes other worlds and subsequently applies these visions to canvas for all to enjoy. He uses swirling and flowing movements to create bold futuristic images.  The Ruler uses strong vibrant tones to enhance the dry strokes of his brush. The texture of these paintings gives the illusion of hair being incorporated into his paint. There will definitely never be another modern day impressionist like Walter The Ruler!

#8     Paddy Purr– “My Wild Irish Nose” – This is our Irish Paddy’s futuristic abstract self portrait.  This is only one of his extensive collection of modern paintings in which include his impression of love, anger, and pain and one of himself while hiking the Appalachian trail.  Not surprisingly, most of these were done while he was partaking in self grown cat nip. His colors are vibrant and free flowing. Paddy’s story is a very familiar one, of cat nip addiction due to his inability to eat or breathe because of his button nose. His surgeries have been expensive, costing $450 each.  Afterwards, with much love and care from the medical staff at the Betty Ford Clinic, Paddy was been weaned off of his nip. Paddy no longer has the urgency to do self portraits to relieve himself of his nasal demons. He is now a professional furniture tester.

#9     Farrah – “Field of Dreams” – What a divine masterpiece! Farrah is definitely a gifted impressionist! In all of her works of art, she shows her superior talent, but this one is absolutely amazing!!! See how she chooses a color pallet that emulate flowers of different depths?! By using tints and shades of reds and pink hues, she catches the calm and content atmosphere of pastures of flowers blooming in the warm sun shine. Despite this calming mood, Farrah longs for this level of tranquility. Her story is a sad one as her past is quickly catching up with her. When she was a younger frisky kitten, Farrah “self medicated” herself. Thus she became hopelessly addicted to Bonito Flakes.  Farrah must be medicated daily at a dreadfully high cost in order for her to maintain her focus and mental stability.

#10   Tabitha – “Aquaphobia” – In this portrait, Tabitha shows her anxieties and distain for large bodies of water. The colors are dark and dank and emphasize her nightmarish phobia. It is impossible to see and appreciate the texture of the sea and storm clouds unless the there is light shining in from the side that catches the ridges and casts small shadows. When the light  does reflect off the course crease of paint, it is absolutely breathtaking! As a result of Tabitha’s concern for even the smallest amount of water, she has had to relinquish her beloved water bed and instead sleep on a duvet filled with soft fluffy paper towels. Tabitha is contemplating opening a boutique that caters to the elite whom choose to use linen constructed solely of recycled paper products.

#11   Fabio – “Fabio After Dark” – Oh my! We all love Fabio, his long silky hair blowing in the breeze, and of course his come-hither eyes! As you can see by the opaque colors and the coarse uneven texture in his brush strokes, he is trying to creating his signature romantic yet tender atmosphere. Don’t you Darlings all agree?!  This beauty doesn’t come at a cheap price, Fabio is constantly being spotted at Resando Farties Hair Spa purchasing large quantities of hair care supplies. Not only does he dish out large sums of money for these organic hair and skin products, but he employs his own personalized groomer who comes to his villa daily and does deep hair grooming. Ohhhh  that lucky girl…running that comb and her fingers through his magnificent locks…….

#12   The Mayor Anony – “Commander in Chief” - Anony’s self portrait demonstrates hurried dramatic swirling strokes. The vivid clashing colors along with the anxious upward movement of his focal point reveals a hidden inward struggle. This painting is quiet lovely and honestly, it needs to bring in a tidy profit. There have been quiet whispering that The Mayor has been connected with the misusage and embezzlement of financial contributions during his prior Mayoral campaign. These are just allegations, but I’m not the only one that has noticed a hint of imported caviar on his breath.  HUMMMMMM!

Monday, Feb. 13

I've received word that the LaChat Family is now in town, in Defiance! We are very excited to meet them! We will have an opportunity to view their extra special collection this evening at 6:00, right there on the cam!  Please join us for the fun! If we have boxes that arrive, we will do BOXES at 5:30.  And remember........the fun of the collection will continue this week!

We had an adoption on Friday. Little Q-tip went to his new home. He went with a person that we know--do believe he will be rather spoiled kitty!

We had BOXES Friday evening.  Many thanks to you.

This Saturday is our FFRC surgery day. For FFRC, we (so far) will have spays for Darcy, Lamula, Xiluva.  And then we have Theodore that needs a neuter. Since this is our low numbers month  (no babies yet) we have opened it up to the public for a Snippity-Do-Da Day. Our limit on this day is 15 public males which is already full.  We also have physicals to do. Will be a busy day.

Our friend Connie S posted this the other day and felt the need to pass this on:

Anayaa is here with me--she is becoming quite the lap cat. She also sure loves soft cushie beds. On my desk at the moment Paddy Purr, Elsie, Zelda, Harvey and Trucker.  It gets a bit squishy sometimes and hard to see what I'm doing, but..........it's always a great way to get work done!

Farmyard News:  the cats are doing very well. It really hasn't been a rough winter at all though. All buildings are being used, including the grey barn, Porchie Haven, FireHouse, the new A-frame feeding station, Covie Haven.  We have left the Cove open this year as Muffin still wants to stay in there---she has claimed The Castle inside the Cove,  as hers and that's where she wants to eat and sleep. So....the door to the Cove has stayed open this winter.  The farm animals are also doing good. Just got in another 100 bales of hay and 30 bales of straw for the horses, donkey and goats.

Janie was just here in the Purple Office, playing with Peanuts and Cairys. It's so sweet to watch them play.  Cami (my black dog) is hanging in there. She's had some rough days recently but seems to bounce back. She is still a happy dog!  Lucas is rolling on the floor with a catnip toy--complete with drooling! Joyful was in the Main Area today--way up on a green catwalk just watching us work. Giovanna is becoming healthier--her coat is starting to get a bit of a shine and she just loves to purr. Life is good!

See you this evening with the LaChat Family! I'm very excited to see their collection.

To all those that have female cats "out there". Please...now is the time to get them spayed. No waiting time is left. In the last week we have heard of many that are in heat and pregnant already. And if you have a boy that is not neutered--it's just as important for him to be neutered.

I would like to pass on a part of the note that we received last night at boxes:
Dear FFRC--Just a note to thank the FFRC family who are so talented and make such beautiful items for all of us to purchase during the Flash Sales and enjoy while at the same time contributing to the operation of FFRC. Your talent and time and love are greatly appreciated.

Darcy, the cat, is cruising about more. She is so beautiful. Love her cream tipped tail.  A couple times now, Walter has found the front of the washer to look at! Chloe has discovered the location of the laundry table and loves to nap there. Joyful frequently comes out and "talks" to me while I'm at my desk. Great news--LaRue was seen snacking on some dry kibble last night. That surely means her jaw is healing!  Polly loves to play with those crackly sounding catnip toys. This morning, Lamula, Harvey and Q-tip discovered the short cord hanging down from the ceiling fan. What fun it is to bat it around. These three siblings are so sweet and cuddly.

Have any plans for Monday at 6:00pm (FFRC time)? Hope your plans are here at FFRC! We will be honored to have the 3 ladies of the famous LaChat family. During next week, you will have an opportunity to participate in their collection. Oh what fun!   Sevaun has already ordered pizza for all the cats to enjoy while checking this event out!

I understand Josh will be here with the wonderful new replacement part for the dryer! So excited about having that dryer working.  I understand a few folks were worried about the washer leaking--no leaking here going on! We did have a bit of water overload from the grooming tub which resulted in the water going under the dryer.

Buck was also here for a bit yesterday and maybe today. He is working on replacing the door frame that we had to take apart for the new dryer. It will sport a new door as the old one will not fit the new frame. Pippi was of great help to Buck yesterday--having her nose right there checking out his work skills!

This blog is in memory of our sweet Ada Jane who would've been 22 years old today.

Weds., Feb. 8, 2017

All the surgeries from Monday went just fine. In addition to the spays/neuters, they did a needed eye enucleation and removal of a polyp. All cats were picked up by 6:15. Most of the females were in heat---a reminder that NOW is the time to get those spays done. Don't wait!

We have some thanks to give!
Mary & family/friends who were here last weekend--brought many wonderful fleece tied blankets for the cats. It was nice to have you all here.
Michael JW--donation to FFRC
Sevaun--made a donation to FFRC--apparently she had made a bet on the Patriots winning the Super Bowl game. (my opinion--she picked the Patriots because it starts with the same letter as her favorite food--Pizza!).  Thanks, Sevaun!

It's done! The naming of the Washer and Dryer. The votes are in. The winning names are: Walter's Washer and Sir Driesalot. I am so grateful for this fun-raiser. We sold 207 tickets which came to $1035.  We then had a $200 donation for this event which brought us to $1235. We will apply this to the bills tonight (Steve's "job" that he does for FFRC!).  Thanks to everyone for the votes and having fun with us!

Our new girl, Mabelline is up in the Main Area now. She has discovered her "spot"--she likes the bed on the steps by the door going into the house. Why?  She wants in!  She did slip in yesterday and decided she likes house-living. Hopefully can find her an awesome home--such a beautiful cat and loves to be petted. I'm sure it feels very nice not to have itchy fleas anymore. Her skin is starting to heal.

Spiker so loves his pink poof bed inside the blue pool. It must be so comfortable for him and keeps him safely "in" while he's sleeping. Felicity was seen climbing and hanging onto the palm tree this morning. Love her little sassy walk she has! Franklin Tommy has discovered he can get on top of the laundry table in it's new position. He so enjoys the soft warm laundry. Pania is on top of the new tree--the one with the arms sticking out--she climbed up there by herself.  She's had her share of Bonito flakes this morning.

We have an appointment at the vet's office on March 1st for Anayaa and LaRue. Both have teeth that need removed. LaRue's jaw alignment should be much improved after her dental. She will be able to close her mouth better. We are still feeding her a gruel mix. She sure loves it and tells us when she is hungry.

We will have BOXES this evening!

Have you visited the website lately at fofrescue.org    Check out the Birthday Calendar (it's under the tab About Us).  And very soon, the Derecho's Chat will be changed and updated! Keep an eye on it!

A short blog today. Have a wonderful day.

Monday, Feb. 6, 2017

HumaneOhio Transport Day is today! We checked in 31 cats! This came from 11 males and 20 females. Because of the very cold morning (we do check ins at 5:30 to 6:00 am) we changed plans and did this inside Paw-Mart. It actually worked out very well. Jones and Sea Turtle weren't so sure though as they had to share space in the office area!

Our numbers have now grown to be 72 spays/neuters so far for 2017.  That breaks down to 40 females and 32 males. As time goes by, we want those numbers to climb and climb!  This evening we will not be able to have BOXES because check outs for these 31 cats will be about 5:30 to 6:15--it all depends on when the Spay/Neuter truck returns.

The Washer and Dryer are still being fine-tuned.  The guys returned today. We've been using the washer and absolutely love it. There is a little problem with the dryer though but hopefully that will be fixed soon. Have no worries about this---the company will get it right--guaranteed!

We have some thanks to give!
Tracy L--donation to FFRC
Hallie G--donation to FFRC
David D--donation to FFRC
Judy & Phil--3 boxes of doggie snackers
Gusti--donation to FFRC, in memory of Sizzle for Feliz Navidad Fund
Mary, Fri vol--Meow Mix cups, Trader Joe's Popcorn, FF snackers, 2 cases appetizers
Richard C--shoe covers, big box of disposable gloves & 4 laser lights
Jason & Annette--1 case Friskies, 3 snacker packets, cat toys

We had 2 adoptions on Saturday.
Jules was adopted to a wonderful family. I've already heard back. Her new name is Pompeii. She and her new friend Mulan are becoming friends and was both on the bed with the smaller dog. She is playful and comes when called. She loves to cuddle up on her mama's neck and enjoys belly rubs. She is in her forever home!

Pippi was also adopted but unfortunately was returned the next day. The resident cat absolutely did not want to share the house with Pippi.  I know that sometimes these things take time, but in this case, time wasn't going to help. So, Pippi is back. But, we learned that Pippi can handle a new home--she did beautifully there and so will again some time!

I do have some sad news about the 2 new kittens that arrived on Friday. Unfortunately, they both have passed away, hours from eah other. I have talked to Dr. Darcy and given what they went thru before coming here, they had very very poor health. I felt very sad about this, but there was nothing we could do.......except give them the love they received while here.

Our other new cat, the calico that was found on my mom's furnace is doing great. She has a name.....it is Mabelline. She is a beauty. We brought her up this morning and she spent a few hours in Dodger's Pen just checking things out. Early afternoon we let her out and she seems quite happy.  A little growly yet but the potential is most definitely there for being a wonderful sweet girl! She's here in the office right now with me all curled up comfortably taking a nap.

I've been working on some new stories.  Here is Coralie's:
CORALIE
A human mama would probably say to her child:  Have your earmuffs?  Check.  Have both your mittens?  Check.  What about your scarf?  Check.  How about your boots?  Check.  We want anyone outside to be warm and safe.

Not so the case with animals at times. It was January 8, 2014--oh my, it was so bitter cold. We had one winter storm after another. Coraliewas outside. She found her way to a lady's back porch. That's all the further she could go. This lady found her laying on her side, stiff, covered in ice and snow. At first she thought the cat had passed away, then a breath was taken. She whisked her inside and wrapped her in towels that were warmed in the dryer. Coralie was 1 1/2 years old. We gave her the birthday of 6/12/12.

The next day, Coralie was brought to Friends of Felines Rescue Center in Defiance, OH. Many parts of her were frostbitten. Her ears, her tail, many toes on all four feet, her rear ankles and her chin. Such a sad thing to see, but Coralie was purring. We began the journey to help her.

After much discussion with our vet, her treatments were started. All of her frostbit areas were slathered in special creams to enhance healing. Pain meds were given. She endured all of this like a sweet cat. She was a good patient even for her daily soaks to her back legs and front feet. We tried so hard to save all these areas. And she fought the battle with us--such a wonderful cat.

Her first surgery was to remove her ear flaps that had turned black and many of her toes had to be removed. But we were so happy that some of the front toes could be saved. Her tail too turned black and could not be saved. She was left with a tail stub though!

Then we continued treatments on those rear legs, desperately trying to save them. But it was not to be. They simply wouldn't heal. They were causing great pain and a fix was not possible.  Her first rear leg was removed, shortly after that her second rear leg was removed.  Now we had a cat with a short-tail, short ears, toes missing and no rear legs. What were we to do? As always, we let the cats decide.

And Coralie decided to live! She's a spunky girl. She decided she loves life and was going to go on living! She is a survivor and is very happy.
She is a permanent resident of FFRC--as she has a few potty issues that would not make for a good adoption. But, no matter, she is rather like the queen of FFRC. We feel her ears are cute, her chin healed just fine, her stubby tails waves and wiggles like any other cat tail! And she can go wherever she wants, whenever she wants to! Coralie has complete freedom in the entire Rescue Center. She tends to think of herself as the cat who needs to teach those whippersnapper kittens some manners!

Watching her play with catnip toys always brings a smile to the volunteers. Every morning after breakfast she loves to go into the towel cabinet for a nap. She has it all figured out---go to the cabinet, stare at it and then stare at the volunteer that is helping. We always get the message! She simply needs a bottom boost and in she goes! To get out, she just pushes the door open.

Coralie has also mastered the "blink blink" trick! Those gorgeous huge eyes of hers.......she knows all she has to do is the blink and we crumble--extra pets and another treat!

She has been pure joy to us. Coralie has taught us that a handicap doesn't have to be viewed as a problem. She carries on in life with a glad heart and with a purpose---to love, to keep those kittens in line and to accept love from all of us. If Coralie could pass on a bit of advise, it would be to protect those outside pets--be sure they have a warm place to be safe in and good food and clean water.

Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017

The Washer and Dryer are here! Wow--what a day. So very exciting and interesting.  The 3 men arrived late morning and were here till very late evening. Three wonderful men--I had a ton of questions and they nicely answered every one of them. The Washer is in place--in the 7 1/2 inch concrete floor with supersized bolts. It can hold 35 pounds of laundry and little soap! The agitation of the spins is quite amazing. That, along with the hot water will kill any virus, bacteria and wash away all dirt. Quite impressive. The dryer is huge and can handle the full load from the washer. However, the Dryer was not able to be completed last night. It's in place, hooked up, but we need to check a number with our propane company on Monday. Josh, the owner, will be back on Monday to complete the job.

I am 100% grateful to you all for making this purchase possible. These are two great machines. Josh says they should last at least 25 years. That's astounding. I stand back and look at them and am in awe---one for their great giant size and two for the "coming together of our FFRCNation" to make this purchase possible. I am so thankful.

We've had to do a bit of rearranging to accommodate the washer and dryer. But....change is always good! We've even moved the Cat-Go-Round Wheel. Still very visable. The laundry table is moved along with the condo pen. It all works out and the cats will soon be use to the new arrangement. It's even Pania approved!

I know there were some concerns about the safety of the cats. First, we had all of the cats behind closed doors for safety. All except Alma and we told her she needed to stay put in her cave/bed area. And of course she did and actually watched with great interest. Considering the cats were in rooms and behind shut doors for many, many hours they did great. But they sure were glad to be out and about last night again!

I also understand many are concerned about the cats and the washer/dryer. Please.....rest assured that there is no way possible for them to get inside these machines--not from on top, not from the sides, or backs or bottoms. Each machine is completely enclosed---100%. I have tripled checked and then checked again---they are safe.

We do know though that the top of the dryer will become hot and so do not want to put towels or bedding up there. I am quite sure and confident that the cats will know and sense this heat and stay off.  It's not going to cause a burn but it will be too warm for them to nap up there. They can however lounge all they want on top of the washer.

We had BOXES on Weds. evening. Big big thanks to you!
Justme/Kathy--cam related equipment
Jauet & Kitties from Netherlands--7 pkgs of Stroopwaffles (yum!), 6 poo kitty toys
Miranda--tub of Yeoooow Catnip and pkg of Greenies
Alan & Elaine B--kitty card made by Alan, donation in memory of LittleKat
Eaglewatcher--wall holder for cam
PJPanda & BadKitty--bag of Bonito Flakes
Anonymous Friend--50 single bags of Lays chips
Mark s--20 pkgs of wash cloths

We had an adoption yesterday! Our sweet Dusty boy was adopted by a wonderful lady. When she came in, Dusty spotted her and that was that, as far as he was concerned---she was going to be his new mama. He followed her room to room and let her know his intentions. And.....she adopted him!

We took on 2 new kittens--unnamed yet but will have names soon.  Both came from Dr. P's office and both have severe eye problems. They were outside, stumbling around as their eyes were pasted shut. Dr. Darcy has already done a surgery ont heir eyes in hopes of saving them. TIme will tell. And in the meantime, we are medicating them and giving them lots of TLC, as they are a bit shy. One is black, a female.  The other is beige/white, a male. They are 10 weeks old. Their birthdays are 11/21/16.  They came in with lice, fleas, herpes, earmites and conjunctivitis. Whew--but....their leukemia/FIV tests are negative. We will continue their care and hope their sight can be saved.

We also took on a new adult cat. Thursday I was going out to my mom's house and looked at her furnace. And there was a cat! A beautiful short haired calico with gorgeous eyes. She had tons of flea dander, thin fur around her lower back and tail and very hungry. I imagine someone dropped her off. She's a sweetie and is starting to move about in the back Thumper's Room.  I don't have an age on her yet or a name.

We sure had a surprise on Thursday afternoon. Sweet LaRue was slurping up her gruel and so enjoying it. Our volunteer went in to pick up the bowl later and discovered a pin in it---it was the pin used for her jaw fracture repair. The wire seemed secure yet, but it warranted a trip to the vets on Friday. It was decided to remove the wire as that too would probably come off, without the pin there.  Her jaw seems to be stable enough not to do another repair surgery. Cats are absolutely amazing in their healing ability. While we all can plainly see her lower jaw is not in alignment at all, we were already told that this was a very difficult fracture to try and align. It does appear LaRue will have to have 3 permanent teeth pulled as they are in the way of how she tries to close her jaw. This would cause her pain and that can be prevented.  This little girl is such a sweet girl and so loves to be held and have her back scratched.

FIVE---yep, that was a great number! We sold all 5 of the afghans on Weds, all before noon. Wow--I was so happy and relieved. Thanks to Rosemary for these stunning afghans and to those that purchased them. It was a great event.

I am sitting at my desk with Paddy Purr, Magic and Trucker, Coralie, Lucas, Phoebe and Hensley here all about me--sure makes for a great way to work on a blog! And Polly is on the floor going crazy with a catnip banana.  Chloe is up on a Kuranda Tower watching Polly having fun. Take care and have a wonderful weekend!

Weds., Feb. 1, 2017

What goes sudsy, sudsy, lots of spinning and draining and lots of tumbling?  Yep---a washer and dryer! And in TWO days, our new washer and dryer will be here!!  We are all so excited. I cannot hardly wait! We'll be meeting that truck in the parking lot! It may be a whole day of installation, I understand. That's ok---may just have to pull up a chair and watch all of it!  We will be putting all the cats and kittens into rooms. The reason is that the doors will be opened and closed alot--don't want anyone to get hurt or get out the door. How so exciting. This is as much YOUR washer and dryer as it is FFRC's!

We have thank yous to give---you truly are appreciated!
Timsprincess--donation to FFRC
Debbie S from NC--donation to FFRC, to use as needed
Lynda S--donation to FFRC
JanefromTN--donation to be used as needed
Sarah J--donation for FFRC
Beth/Lurker Bea--5 big bags of Precious litter!

We've moved the 6 cats/kittens from the back Thumper's Room to Kitty Campus Room yesterday. Today they are in Cat's Corner Room.  They seemed reluctant to come into the Main Area, so this will help.  A little closer to being out!  These cats are: Darcy, Xiluva, Lucas, Anayaa, LaRue and Theodore.  I do believe LaRue's mouth is starting to feel better now. She will be going up to the vet's next week for a check on her mouth.

Farm News:  we took on 5 new hens that needed a home. They are 4 years old. They actually arrived last week. We kept them in the chicken coop for 6 days and then opened their door. They are now out and about with the other chickens. Little banty rooster thinks those newbies are his! He doesn't realize they are about 6 times bigger than he is!

We had something very exciting happen to FFRC. We received a phone call a few days ago from Church and Dwight in Old Fort, Oh. They deal with many items, including Arm & Hammer litter. They asked if we needed any.  What???  My first thought was-------is this for real?!  And then I realized we were being given a wonderful gift! Larry and Martha L went and got it yesterday--4,000 pounds of Arm & Hammer.  I am so so grateful. We will mix this in with our Precious Litter that we love to use!  I'd also like to give thanks to Lynnette, Anthony, Steve, Larry, Martha, Angie M and Pat/bedheadsdad for helping to unload. It all fit nicely in Shed #1.

Today is our  In Memory of Paul's 5 afghans sale. All afghans are made by that afghan master Rosemary from South Africa.  The sale started at 8 am and ends at 10 am tomorrow morning (if there are any left!)  So far, C and E have been spoken for--at 8:00 sharp!  Check it out on our fb pages, Twitter and FFRCNation.  Keep track of updates as I'm hoping all 5 of these will go fast.

The House that Jonah Built--wanted to give an update on our 3 CH cats that live as Covies. They are all 3 doing wonderful. It truly was the best decision to let them have the Cove as their home. All 3 love it and are happy.  August got some special chicken this morning. Jersey went after the snackers and Jackson was the first to dive into the breakfast plate! It's nice and snuggly in THTJB.  On fair days I see many of them out and about in their big playground.

Remember to mark your calendar for 2/13--it's Show Time at 6:00.  It's the beginning of a very different Fun-Raiser! You'll want to get a drink, people snackers and pull up a comfy chair.  And be ready to do alot of laughing! This particular Fun-Raiser will go towards our Feliz Navidad Fund.  It will start immediately after the Show (can't say what kind of show yet!) and end at 9:00 am on 2/17.  And then join us after BOXES that evening (2/17) for the names of who will receive these beautiful "pieces".  It's amazing!

Some other dates for Feb.--
