Monday, May 25, 2020

Happy Memorial Day. Let freedom ring. Memorial Day is an Americn holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  Many thanks too to those who have served for our freedom.

We've had 6 more adoptions!
Dalia--adopted 5/21. A Basani kitten. She was adopted into a home with 2 other cats!
Navara & Pepper--adopted 5/21. Kittens of Kimmie. They were adopted into a home where they are the only pets.
Temba--adopted 5/22--a 7 yr. old cat. Went into a home where a young lady is her new mama!
Beulah & Celeste--adopted 5/22.  Kittens that were brought by the Sheriff's.

I'm thrilled with these new homes and feel very happy with each of them.  I've heard back from some of the families already and all seem to be acclimating well to their new homes.

We took in two new kittens--both very small, both with leg problems. (what is it with legs this year?)
Keefer--arrived 5/22, was found outside by self. 4 weeks old, weights 12 ounces, birthdate of 4/24/20.  He is a long hair gold/white kitten. His rear legs, I believe, received an injury. That and with his emaciated state, he couldn't keep his legs under him--they kept toppling. He received fluids but when the food came........he couldn't eat it fast enough. The poor boy was so very hungry.  Today, he has just a slight toppling of his rear legs. He is much stronger, has already gained a couple ounces and is climbing and running. A real sweetie.

Muddles--arrived 5/22--was also found by himself, 4 1/2 weeks old, 1.03 weight, birthdate of 4/20/20. He is a short hair black/whitekitten. His left rear leg is sore--has received an injury. It certainly isn't stopping him as he is playing and roughhousing with the other kittens. He too was very hungry and he went right into the food plate to eat. Another sweetie kitten.

Xibowa is doing great--he's already has gained 5 ounces and so loves playing with the other kittens. There's no stopping Uri--he is a little firrecracker--zooming here and jumping there. Perseus is also improving day by day. I watched him today and he was running with barely a limp. In all the kitten activity play, he's almost always in the middle of it!

Lucas is doing better! Eating just enough so he doesn't have to have a feeding tube placed!  Today he will be in the front Thumper's Room for a bit of exercise. I'm sure he's starting to miss his Covie friends--it's been a week now since his dental. We need him eating a little bit more volume before he goes back to the Cove.

We have thanks to give! We are grateful----
Twkitty--donation in memory of her Auntie Mae, who passed at 100 years of age. She has a cat named Ebony who survives.
Candace A--donation to help with our utility bills!
Steph & Trevor--donation in honor of super mom cat Minnie
Janet K--donation for the ffrc kitties
Kelly L--donation for FFRC
Gusti--donation for sweet Lucas's vet bill
Marti W--donation for FFRC
Stanley E--donation to FFRC, in memory of Pauline/deptford
Cheryl L--donation to FFRC, in memory of Pauline/deptford

Yes, our dear friend Pauline has passed away. Her daughter let FFRC know. While very sad for this loss, her daughter wishes FFRC peace with this.  Pauline has made such beautiful glassworks and donated so much of her work to FFRC.  Treasure those Christmas trees, the stars, the cats , etc that she made--all done with love by her.

Many thanks for helping us with our flash sale--this one was made up of many individual items that were donated by our FFRC friends. Thanks to the flash mods for helping us with this. This Flash Sale brought in $611 and will be applied to our quarterly taxes.  Big time thanks!

We still are making masks for anyone who needs them! I believe LJ has now made a bit over a thousand of these masks. They are very well made--2 layers of material with an interfacing in the middle.  They are pleated, have a wire that goes over the nose to hold in place.  We have them in women and men's sizes.  The cost---a freewill donation to FFRC.  You can email me if sending a check to let me know what you need--male or female.  If using PayPal, simply go to paypal and send with a note as to your wishes.  If you have a favorite color, let me know--we try to match things up. Sometimes we can, sometimes we can't!  LJ firmly believes that if you want a mask, we need to send TWO--one to wear, one to wash.  These masks can simply be washed in a sink with soak/water, rinsed well and hang up to dry. Thank you!

We had BOXES on Friday! We appreciate you all and for helping us. We are doubly grateful, during this coronavirus time, that you help us.

Derecho.......what an amazing cat he is. You know, he's kind to all of the cats and the kittens. He is their Uncle D that teaches the kittens their manners. This morning I saw the sweetest thing ever.  There's Derecho in the Purple Office--he had most of the younguns with him.  They were huddled around him, listening to him.. He was talking about the power of saying nice things, the power of doing kind things, the beauty of friendships.
You see, our kittens learn so much from the adults here. They learn polite play ways from the other kittens. But, so important, they learn how to grow up to be very nice cats.
He told the kittens that kindness makes them purr and that in itself makes humans smile. He told them that kindness is a remedy for the heart. It opens the door to new friendships and possibly their forever home. Being a sweet kitten gives them a kind identity. Plus, kindness comes back to them--they should share their catnip, share their sleeping blankets, share their snackers.  It's all in the sake of friendship and just being kind.

What a smart boy he is!  You all take care, stay healthy and have a wonderful week.

Thursday, May 21, 2020

When this Coronavirus first started and we had to close, I thought we would have lots of extra time to do different things here.  Well, things have actually been super busy, every single week, every single day.  And yes, we do indeed have to do things differently---maybe that is why each week is so busy.  Everyday has been full, it seems.

We had 2 adoptions yesterday.
Marin--kitten of Kimmie.  Went to her new home and will be friends with an old, gentle giant of a dog.  She now has her very own mama!

Lynnie--kitten of Kimmie.  Went to her new home with a dad, mom and a little boy (grandsom to parents).  Lynnie was the first of the 8 kittens to have a hold put on her.

Here is an email from Lynnie:
Dear Mama Jacci, Thank you for rescuing me, loving on me, helping me grow up and find a home.
I am so happy! I enjoyed my car ride to Fort Wayne and didn’t cry at all. I just watched my new parents and then fell asleep on my purple mama.  When I got to my new home it was like Christmas! So many new toys and a nice little boy too...he’s their grandson.  I used the litter box right away (and did both jobs) ate a little dinner then play, play, play!  Soon it was time to go upstairs to get ready for bed...I was tired! The little boy had been nice to me so I crawled up in his lap and gave him my first purr. He was so happy! He then read me a book until I fell asleep.
When I woke up about an hour later, he wasn’t there so I went looking for my mom. She was right there sleeping on the floor! I snuggled up to her chin, turned on my purr box and slept the rest of the night with her. I didn’t cry at all...probably because I know I am loved lots here!
Thank you mama Jacci for finding me the perfect home...I love you!
Love, Lynnie

THIS is what it's all about and what our gift is to each and every cat and kitten that comes to FFRC--their very own home.

Yesterday was also Visitation Day--designed for people to have a certain time slot to come and see the available kittens.  We put those kittens in the back Thumper's Room.  Each family is allowed an hour to visit.  By the end of the day, we had 4 more cats on hold---Tooley, Rascus, Jenga and Temba.
Temba will leave Friday morning around 9:00 am.
The other 3 kittens have to be spayed/neutered before their adoption can take place.
We have another VIsitation Day on Friday--2 more families coming in the morning to visit.

We also took on another kitten yesterday. And she had to have a beautiful name.  The reason is because she was crying and a very nice couple found her---in a trash container.  She is most certainly NOT trash. Her name is Xibowa which means flower.  It's pronounced Shi BOW uh.
Xibowa is all black except for a white tummy.  She weighs 14 ounces. Her birthday is 4/18/20, making her 4 1/2 weeks old.  This morning, I had to draw blood for her leukemia/fiv/heartworm test. And she was crying. That dear sweet Minnie jumped up on the counter and tried to take her away from me.  Minnie---an absolute gem of a mama.  As soon as I was done, I gave Xibowa to Minnie to be comforted. She snugged up to Minnie's tummy.  If there's anyone out there that doesn't believe cats have feelings, they should have witnessed that.

Today is a Flash Sale at 11:00--there's many individual items!  This sale will help us with our utility bills (yes, still need to work on these).  Also today at 1:00 is our Thursday Trivia.

We have some thanks to give!
Andrew G--donation to FFRC
Fran D--donation to FFRC in honor of Ramsay and Marilyn's birthdays!
YvonneVDK--donation to be used where needed the most
Alexandra U from IL--donation to FFRC
Kelly I--donation to FFRC
Uwe N--donation in memory of Mowgli. And another donation for the Feliz Navidad Fund and in honor of Ramsay and Marilyn's birthday!

On Monday, Lucas had his dental. Lucas is a Covie. This turned into a major deal with him--2 1/2 hours.  He was thought to have aspirated but not 100% sure.  X-rays had to be done and lab work.  His heart also seems quite big.  Will do a blood test for cardiomyopathy.  All of his meds have had to be given by injection as he doesn't want anything in his mouth.  He's been given SQ fluids twice a day. Just this morning though he licked up his breakfast! So, hoping today forward are all good days now.  I'm sure he's anxious to get back out with his Covie friends.

Tonio's Den.  I've been asked to pass on his story as it's been awhile since it's been said.  Tonio's Den is part of our towel cabinet, under the countertop that we prepare food at.
"To know about Tonio's Den you first must know about Tonio. Tonio was an awesome cat. He arrived at FFRC when he was 12 years old. The people who were his family said their vet told them that he had diabetes and they just didn't want to deal with it.  This wonderful soul was handed over without as much as a hug. We named him Tonio. He was part Siamese with gorgeous blue eyes. He was a gentle boy. He liked everyone, never fussed at anyone, just wanted to be loved. The odd thing is, he never showed a single sign of having diabetes and was never treated for it here at FFRC.  Tonio was good to everyone--cats, kittens, dogs and people. He just enjoyed being alive and knowing he was loved. His absolute favorite place to sleep was in the cabinet under the counter. This is where the towels were stored and it was always good for a comfy sleep.  He learned how the doors would open very easily. Soon the other cats and kittens figured it out too.  Many times there would be a pile of cats sleeping away in what we now call Tonio's Den. One year, we were able to get new cabinets and we decided the far right door still had to have Tonio's Den painted on it. The kittens and cats have learned how to open these cupboard doors too. There came a time that Tonio slowed up and it was in the fall of 2010, after being with us for 4 years.  By now he was 16 years old. It was time to say goodbye to this good old boy. Some of us circled him physically and with love, he was allowed to pass to kitty heaven. This boy was missed tremendously and we still think of him fondly.  A truly gentle boy."

And those towel cabinets still continue to be a sleep zone for some of the cats!  No worries---they cannot get locked inside them. There's no latches or hooks.  It just takes a pull with a claw to open and a push with a paw to go back out!

I know some of you have been concerned with the major rain we got three days ago.  Probably the most rain I've ever seen at one time here in Defiance.  Yes, our rivers are flooded.  But we are not flooded here at FFRC, even though the river is right across our road and the backwater is behind us. But, the farmyard was underwater for a full day. The ducks and geese loved it! But, we are dry here inside FFRC.

Thanks to you all for being a part of this Rescue Center.  Take good care and stay healthy.  BOXES are Friday at 1:00.  See you at our Flash Sale today at 11:00!

We had a Flash Sale also on Friday.  This will go towards our utility bills. We sold 12 Surprise Grab Bags. This came to $300----many thanks to all who participated!

The 3 new kittens that were tossed from a car are doing great. Rezzy, Beulah and Celeste. They are now spending most of their time in the Main Area. Tonight may be their first night up front! They can do it---their bravery-ness has grown!  And all 3 are so very sweet.

We had an adoption this morning! We had a couple that had visited a bit ago and enjoyed meeting Kenco. He has become so very comfortable in this last week and I felt, was emotionally ready now to go to his new home. He's a happy boy, so loves attention and will thrive being in a home atmosphere again!  They will keep his name of Kenco.

Orion has also been adopted. He is one of Kimmie's kittens and the first to leave us. He was adopted on 5/16. His new best friend is an older beagle named Bandit. I've already seen a picture of the two making friends!

Every day now we open the Thumper Room doors and the Welcome Room door so the kitties in the back can come up front.  They are enjoying this.  It always amazes me, that when nap time comes, they go back in their own rooms.  Kimmie's kitties go to Kitty Campus Room.  Basani's kitties go to the Kabana Room.  And all the little kittens that Minnie is taking care of go to the back Thumper's Room.  It always makes me smile when I see them heading for their own areas!

We have more thanks to give:

We have a busy Weds. coming up.  All day, we have staggered public visits in the back Thumper's Room to visit the available kittens, to possibly put on holds!  Again, like before, we have scheduled 1 hour visits with 15 minutes in between so we have time to clean everything before the next visitor. Hands will be sanitized and we certainly will be wearing our masks.  We also have a couple appointments scheduled for Friday too.

Azreal is still here in the Main Area. Actually, we should say, when it's not raining, she is mostly in the Bella's Place/dog run. She loves it.  I've been trying to pick a day that is not rainy for her to start her fun life as a Covie!  I will miss her not being up here though.  We must leave her in and out 10 times a day!

Our littlest two kittens--Rascas and Josiah Thomas are BIG eaters. They just throw themselves into their eating! Both of their tummies are very round. Uri has learned how to climb--nothing stops that boy.  And he thinks he is the big mop slayer--wants to tackle it all the time!  I'm pleased at how Perseus is using his fractured leg. He's strengthening the muscles. Time will still tell the outcome. Taffeta and Tooey have come so very far in their personality. Both enjoy being loved on now.

You all take good care. Keep on hand washing and wear your masks!  We want you all to be safe and healthy.  Besides......Derecho said so!

Thursday, May 14, 2020

What an awesome HumaneOhio day!  We are back on doing low cost spays/neuters and it feels very good!  We sent up 60---yes, a whopping record 60!  This broke down to 33 females and 27 males.  This includes 6 cats from FFRC. Our total now for 2020 is 356---197 females and 159 males
So we'r at 356.  Last year this time we were 478.  Our goal for 2020 is 100 more than 2019.  We are behind due to the close down from Coronavirus. We have some catching up to do!  Let's see if we can still pull this off!

Last night we took on 3 new kittens. The police called and said a person in a neighborhood witnessed someone tossing out these 3 kittens from the car.  They are very friendly and were soon caught and brought to FFRC last night. And then we sent them to HumaneOhio today!
Beulah--female, brown tiger with 4 white feet, wt is 2.11
Rezzy--male, gold tiger, ASH, wt is 3.02
Celeste--female, brown tiger, wt is 2.10
They are 11 weeks old with a birthday of 2/26/20.  Their names are from the Name a Cat list.

The other 3 cats sent to HumaneOhio today were Kimmie, Orion and Pepper.

Today is the official adoption date for Josette. She already had a home as of last week. She was spayed at HumaneOhio.  We let her go early due to her not being happy here with the other cats. Her home is she is the princess of the house.  Her spay is done and she will return to the home that she's had all week.

As you know, Perseus had a return visit to the vet's office on Tuesday for a splint to stabilize the 2 fractures in his rear right leg.  Dr. Darcy called me that afternoon and said they had the splint on (he had a sedative) and another x-ray was taken.  His leg was actually in better alignment without the splint so it was removed.  We will give him some time and see how things may heal.  Let's hope it is in good alignment to heal properly and not cause him pain as he grows.  TIme will tell.

We have thanks to give--we are so very grateful for your support.
 Pamela C--donation to FFRC
Gusti--donation for vet costs for Perseus
MCL Jewelry Designs--donation for FFRC
Frances C--donation to FFRC, a friend of Nona
Faith--donation to help with a spay or neuter
Denise & Elizabeth from SC--donation to FFRC, in memory of Cutie
Lynda D from NC--donation to help with medical expenses
Melissa K from OH--donation to FFRC
Kelly I--donation for FFRC
Leanne & Mike--donation to help with vet and med costs

Rascus the new brown tiger is an ornery little fella!  One of his favorite things to do is to climb up and jump down! He may be tiny but he is mighty. Thyme is doing a little bit better at being handled but has a ways to go,  Cobo is just one of the cutest little kittens. Won't be long until he will be going home.  Navara was trying her best to climb the Kuranda Towers--just a little too short yet on one end.  The kittens in the back Thumper's Room love the yellow banana bed--they can squeeze alot of kittens onto it!

We still have masks available!  We have sent out many hundreds of them!  If interested, can go ahead and send a paypal or a check.  If doing a check, be sure to email me to let me know your wishes!  We try to match up color preferences and design choices but not always possible.  But, truly ALL the masks are wonderful and terrifically made.  LJ has been very busy doing her wonders on her sewing machine.  We love to turn the masks for her and to cut and bend the wire and to cut the elastic but LJ is the pro at sewing.  And did you know it takes alot of talent to do the folding of the masks?  She's super good at it!  The cost for the masks is a free-will donation!  Just let me know!

We will probably be letting Azreal be a Covie cat.  She absolutely loves being outside and spends many hours a day in Bella's Run, the dog area.  It's connected to the Thumper's Room.  She's a whiz at running thru the door to get to the back door and then will proceed to meow with a very determined voice----let me out!! When she is there, it's obvious she is peaceful.  I'm betting the Covies would welcome her as a good friend. I can imagine her running full out there in the grass!

Take care.  BOXES are tomorrow, Friday at noon!  We also have a Quickie Flash Sale at 11:30, right before BOXES.  The items for the Flash Sale---surprise bags! We have 12 surprise grab bags, valued at $60 but the asking price is $25.  Good luck!

Tuesday, May 12, 2020

Wow--we have a lot of catching up to do! Grab a seat, drink, snack and a cat to pet!

While we are trying to be very conservative financially wise, we still have to keep up with the medical needs of all of the cats and kittens.  We cannot scrimp in that department.

As you know, we had 2 dentals last week.  They are doing great and I'm sure they are feeling much better.

May 18, Monday we have 2 more dentals--two covies who are Lucas and Sylvan.

Yesterday, we sent up Uri and Perseus for x-rays.

Uri is our "swimmer syndrome" kitten.  His x-rays were done as a baseline for him and so we could be assured nothing drastic is wrong other than his swimmer legs.  All is fine.  Daily he receives exercises and get put on a carpet where he can use his muscles to get his legs under him better. He's also been in the sink multiple times to exercise.  All in all, he is doing fine.  Ideally, treatment should start as early as 2-3 weeks. We did not get Uri until he was 7 weeks old. Even if he stands still right now in his improvements, that kitten is doing great.  He is a speedy-boy and can play and run and climb like any other kitten!

Perseus arrived here as a 6 1/2 week old kitten on 5/7. He has that laceration on the inner right leg.  That same leg has been very painful and he spends most of his time just laying.  His x-rays showed a complete break in both the tibia and fibula. The problem---the fractures are extremely close to the growth plate. The delimna--he's only 1.08 pounds--too little for major surgery and with the fractures so close to the growth plate, it would not be wise to put a pin in these 2 bones. Another problem--those bones are very teeny tiny in diameter to get a pin in them.  So......today, he will have his leg put in a splint in hopes of those bones healing in a somewhat good position.  Time will tell on these fractures what will happen.  Steve will take him up this morning and we will get him back later today.

Thyme went for a short distance road trip.  While Toollie and Taffeta are super friendly, Thyme had it in her mind that people were not her friends.  She's only 7 weeks old, but unfortunately she had not been handled very much which left her with much distrust. An FFRC friend is trying to work her magic on this little girl.

We have taken on a few new kittens:
Rascus--came from Dr. P's office yesterday.  He had been found in one of the tech's yard, alongside their road and almost was ran over. The tech saved him, took him to Dr. P's where he stayed a few days and came back yesterday with Uri and Perseus.  Rascus is 4 weeks old, his birthday is 4/13/20.  He's a black/brown tiger and full of himself!  He has already made friends with all the other kittens and is a bit of an overactive kitten--just a silly little boy.

Carolina--she was found across our river, in a church parking lot and brought to FFRC on 5/9.  She is 4 weeks old and her birthday is 4/11/20.  She is a long hair black kitten that arrived at 15 ounces.  A bit shy but is overcoming that.

Jenga and Josiah Thomas were brought in together on 5/9 after being found on a friend's porch, obviously put there by someone as they are too small to have gotten there by themselves.
Josiah Thomas is a male grey tiger, weighed 11 ounces.
Jenga is a female grey tiger/white, weighed 1.03.
These two J kittens are not from the same litter.  Josiah Thomas has a birthday of 4/11 and Jenga's birthday is 4/4.  BOth are very sweet and has fit right in.

This means alot more work for Mama Minnie. She is one super wonderful cat and has accepted every kitten I've put on the floor.  When the last four ones arrived and they at first cried a bit, she came and took the two smaller ones and hauled them into a bed where she gave them each a bath.  This mama deserves a gold star.

We also had 2 adult cats returned.  They left here as little kittens and returned as 7 year olds.
Kenco---dark orange and white. He has a long white snip up his nose.  His birthday is 4/21/13. He was adopted on 9/28/13 and was returned on 5/7/20.
Temba--brown tiger. She has the most gorgeous eyes. Her birthday is 3/17/13. She was adopted on 9/28/13 (with Kenco) and was returned on 5/7.
These two cats are wonderful. They were returned thru no fault of their own--no bad habits, just two loving sweet cats.  They are friends but not bonded and can be adopted separately.  Temba makes it very plain that she wants lots and lots of petting.  Kenco is also a sweetie.  Both are now out and about in the Main Area.  Both are declawed all 4.  Sometimes people's lifestyles change and they can no longer keep their pets. We are glad they were returned here and we will find them new awesome homes.

Thursday, May 7, 2020

Every hour of every day seems to be filled here.  I had thought things would be quieter right now, during this coronavirus time. That was very wrong.  We have kept very busy, every single day.  But, it's all good.  It's all towards keeping FFRC up and running.

This week has been extra busy in having visitors come to look at the kittens. But, we are being careful.  Masks are worn by all visitors, visits are for an hour and then rooms are cleaned in between each visit.  Lots of handwashing. No visitors in Main Area--just in back Thumper's Room.  So far, this has worked well.  As of right now, we have all 14 kittens with firm holds.

But, we have received more kittens!
Marti arrived this morning. Female, black, 4 weeks old, weight is 14 ounces.  Her birthday is 4/9/20.  She was found all by her lonesome in a yard.  She's already a sweetie and likes to be held.

Uri arrived 5/4. Male, brown tiger. He is 7 weeks old with a birthday of 3//17/20. He was born with "Swimmers Syndrome".  This is a congenital condition causing the legs to splay laterally. This is where the tendons and ligaments do not hold the leg in it's proper position, resulting in a frog-like look.  Treatment is best if started early, even 2-3 weeks of age. Early intervention is critical. Treatment involves taping legs in correct position, physical therapy and even water therapy--all of which is being done with Uri. We've had Swimmer Kittens long ago but not recently. He seems to be a bit different than most as he is definitely experiencing pain in the legs. But, we will continue our care for him. He's a happy boy and loves to purr and look right in your eye as if to say he's glad he's here. His name means My Light.

Toolie, Taffeta, Thyme--these 3 black/white kittens are siblings. Toolie and Taffeta arrived on 5/5 and Thyme arrived this morning 5/7.
Toolie, male, black/white bl dot on nose & black chin
Taffeta, female, black/white, bl dot on nose and also on chin
Thyme, female, black/white, 1 eye black, 1 eye white
These three were born on 3/24 and are 6 weeks old.  Toolie and Taffeta have fit right in and are having fun.  Thyme needs a little extra TLC yet but we will coax her around!

All the kittens above are in the back Thumper's Room. Minnie has graciously taken them all on. Uri especially couldn't wait to have a new mama--it was so very sweet. Minnie is such a kind adult (still needs a home!) and is so patient and loving with these now 11 kittens.

Basani nd Kimmie's kittens are doing great. And I'm so pleased with Basani and Kimmie--we've been opening their doors lately for hours a day. They, for the most part, have remained cool and calm with all the other cats. And that makes life so nice here to have the mama cats and kittens out and about. These 8 kittens are so fun--crazy, climbers, runners, purrers, fun-makers!

I've seen 3 of the Siamese kittens recently--their weights are good, they've all grown and they sure are loved!

I've been asked a few times now about Sylvia II.  She herself is doing good but unfortunately, her kittens did not survive.  She had two, both "mumified".  This is sometimes simply called a miscarriage or stillborn. Mummification occurs when the body creates a protective membrane around the fetus, allowing it to remain encased and walled-off within the uterus.  It normally does not pose any threat to the female.  Sylvia is doing great and is eating and playing. She will be spayed in May and will stay at this home.  I got the official word that she would stay there on 5/1 so we will call that her adoption day.

I've gotten behind on our thank yous, for which I am sorry. Please know though that your donations, your support means a lot to FFRC and that you make a difference.

These donations and others are what saves FFRC.  When this coronavirus first began, I was concerned because I knew we would lose some of our fund-raiser abilities.  So far, we've had to cancel 6 fundraisers--- 2 of the big monthly fun-raisers, the Lilac Festival, the Dance Recital and an Art class.  Plus, our biggest Fund-raiser of the year has been cancelled--hopefully temporarily--the Catathon.  There is simply no way we can get this big event ready by the end of May and have it in June.  It takes 40 plus people here inside the building to make this happen--and that is way too much contact for safety. Plus, I do not feel it would be appropriate to ask people to help us with donations for Catathoon at this financial crunch time.  So..........this makes your donations extra super appreciated!

We will just tighten our belts for right now--no general improvements. No nothing extra for now.  We are still not having people in the Main Area, even though some of Ohio is starting to open up.  I am not comfortable with having the public in where the volunteers are yet.

As you may have noticed, we have at times been wearing masks here inside the Main Area.  Our "rule of thumb" is:
If only one volunteer here, no mask is required.
If doing outside cat chores, no mask is required.
If there are TWO people here and you can stay 6 feet apart, then no mask is required.
If there are THREE people here, then a MASK IS REQUIRED.
If going into PawMart, a MASK IS REQUUIRED.

The bottom line is the safety of our volunteers.  The fate of this Rescue Center also depends on the health of our volunteers and of Steve and myself.

Wishing you all to be healthy. It's been wonderful to have you all on the chat and watching the kitties and cats on the cam.  They can be a happy spot of your day! Be safe, stay healthy and hug your pets!

Friday, May 1, 2020

Happy May day to everyone.  It truly has to start feeling more like spring soon, I hope!  But, the grass is green, flowers are blooming. And my 2 very favorite things--tree frogs are chirping and the morning birds sing their songs!

We had a quickie Flash Sale on Weds.  These are so very helpful.  FFRC made $605!  I thank our Flashy Mods for your assistance. And to Warped who donated the blankies. We also had 8 fun Grab Bags. We appreciate all of your support.

We have more thanks to give---our hearts are warmed by your support!

Great news!  Keep those feet walking, running and biking!  We just received $95.59 from ResQwalk!  Isn't that wonderful!  That's just from using your ResQwalk app and adding up those miles!  It's all like "free money".  Many thanks for this.

Did you know that anything you purchase from Amazon can benefit FFRC, no matter where you send it to?  Yep, it's true!  If you go to our website at fofrescue.org and click on Amazon (yellow bar), FFRC will get a kick back!  We just received a deposit of $165.28!!  Big thanks!

Usually twice a day, we get the 8 kittens out onto the Main Floor.  5 of Kimmie's kittens and the 3 of Basani's.  They are only a day apart.  The 6 kittens of Minnie's are in the back Thumper's Room.  All 14 of these kittens are actually eating pretty good from the plates!  We've been alternating Basini and family and then Kimmie and family between Kitty Kampus Room and Kitty Kabana Room--just to mix up their scents.  The 3 mamas are super protective and so that makes it not possible to have the mamas on the Main Area yet.

I know you all like to know the "scoop" of the happenings here at FFRC.  Next week is going to be super busy.  It's the beginning of letting people come in to start putting holds onto these 14 kittens. and Josette.  No worries--we are being careful!  All visits have staggered scheduled times.  Visits are for 1 hour.  Then we have 15 minutes to disinfect the room (back Thumper's Room) before the next visit.  No public will be in the Main Area. We will be wearing masks. Of course, the kittens will be here for all of May as they will be spayed/neutered before leaving us.

Here's (so far) the schedule for next week.  I'm still working on a couple more appointments.
Saturday, 5/2----- 9:30
Monday, 5/4-----9:15, 10:30, 11:45, 1:00, 2:00, 3:15
Tuesday, 5/5-----10:15, 11:30
Weds., 5/6-----9:45, 11:00, 1:45
Friday, 5/8-----10:15

The kittens are out right now--there's 4 here in my office area. And they are nuts!  Running, climbing, wrestling--so full of energy!

As you know, HumaneOhio is back on, with many health restrictions. Our 5/14 and 5/18 dates are already full.  We are already working on the June dates.  It just makes me so happy that people are so interested in getting their cats and kittens spayed/neutered.

Azreal is still here in the Main Area with many many daily trips to Bella's Place--the outside dog run. She totally has OUTSIDE written on her brain. She was found outside and truly feels that drive to be there. If she's here inside, she will meow over and over and over again to be left back out to the dog run. She's very happy out there--loves watching the bird feeders, rolling around and just hanging out.  She would be very difficult to adopt as an inside cat--her drive is tremendous to be outside.  Azreal will probably be joining the Covies. I can already see her running and running and climbing on everything! Sometimes, it's just impossible to change their head set.

You all take good care. Stay healthy. Be kind to one another.  Snoopybaby sent me something that I have on the counter for anyone to read.  I'd like to share this:

As governors are trying to figure out how to ease back in to a new normal, please remember:

🛑 Some people don’t agree with the state opening.... that’s okay. Be kind.

🏡 Some people are still planning to stay home.... that’s okay. Be kind.

🦠 Some are still scared of getting the virus and a second wave happening....that’s okay. Be kind.

💰 Some are sighing with relief to go back to work knowing they may not lose their business or their homes....that’s okay. Be kind.

👩🏾‍⚕️Some are thankful they can finally have a surgery they have put off....that’s okay. Be kind.

📝 Some will be able to attend interviews after weeks without a job....that’s okay. Be kind.

😷 Some will wear masks for weeks....that’s okay. Be kind.

💅🏻 Some people will rush out to get the hair or nails done.... that’s okay. Be kind.

❤️ The point is, everyone has different viewpoints/feelings and that’s okay. Be kind.

We each have a different story. If you need to stay home, stay home. But be kind .

If you need to go out, just respect others when in public and be kind!
Don’t judge fellow humans because you’re not in their story. We all are in different mental states than we were months ago. So remember, be kind.
