Our rescue center is full of joy.  It's also full of hard work, sweat, lots of tears and even some blood at times.  But.......it also holds kitties and cats that need as much love, medical care and attention that they can get.  It's full of people---volunteers--that give their all to these kitties and cats.  And it brings tons of memories--it's fun to play the remember this, remember that game! It also has families....people who are willing to give the best gift of all--a real home for their new pets.

Most of our news is awesome--happy, uplifting and fun.  Like...Boom Boom standing in the middle of a plate to eat.  Zelda meeting me at the door every morning when I first come out.  Jessie practicing her "bossy talk" to each of us, knowing we will indeed respond to her.  Cheering Ramsay on when he is making his way across the room.  Rooting for Alma who makes her way all by herself to the litterbox! Pania telling us it's time for Pania Flakes. And Derecho--his "food talk" in the morning--such sweet meow music he makes! There is always wonderful positive things that are happening here.

And........there are certainly sad things that happen too.  Today was one of those.  We have now lost all 5 of Zastria's kittens.  You already know, they were of light birth weight. They were also slightly underdeveloped at birth. But, something different has happened that I've never seen before. Each have just stopped eating and have lost more weight. Upon looking them over, while still alive, I discovered their tongues had turned blackish, the perimeter of their tongues were white and a few had ulcers on their tongues. They have all died between 5-8 days of life. So so very young to be showing like a viral infection. Because this was very strange, I took pictures and sent to Dr. Darcy who has shared them with Dr. P. It is a mystery yet what this is from. We have an idea but to find out for sure, a necropsy will be done. It'll be sent out today and will probably take a week to get results. Mama Zastria and her earlier litter--Yahtzee, Simpson and Ziva appear to be healthy. Zastria is wanting back in the Main Area, but we are holding her off for a couple more days. I'll keep you posted as to the results.

So, while most of our experiences here are joyful and good, we certainly have our hard times.  These have to be considered as learning times also.  I try to never let a single death that happens here, be in vain.  I want to learn something from each one so that we become better, stronger, more efficient at helping the cats and kittens.

This is going to come up again, so I'll just address it here.  How do I cope with these losses?  For me, it's thru prayer and knowing that I am in the right place for where I'm suppose to be in my life.  I know beyond a doubt that these kitties and cats come to us for a reason--to be loved, to be cared for.  And if their lives end too soon, I know in my heart that they've been loved. I cannot change some of these sad things that happen. I can just make sure, within myself, that I have done all I could.  Some days I think I can't do it again...the experience of another death. And then.......a kitten meows at me, a cat curls up in my lap, Magic paws at me on my leg, Zelda head butts me, a kitten comes in with a sickness that we can help. Or a cat arrives, hit by a car and we can help with the healing. So many opportunities to  help these cats, to love them and let them enjoy themselves.......because every cat really does matter.

Keep that date September 12, Saturday open for FFRC.  Even though Catstock as we've known it, is cancelled, we have some fun ideas! Mark your calendars!

CATSTOCK INFO AND MORE!
Steve and I have put much thought into this decision. After giving consideration to both sides of whether to have Catstock or not, it’s been decided to cancel Catstock 2020.
Reasons:
We have no idea how the coronavirus will be by the time Sept 12th rolls around
We’ve already had some folks say they will not come due to the worry of their health if they were to attend. It would be hard to predict how many would come. Many would not, simply to protect themselves. But some would. People flying in and driving here from many areas causes concern about the possibility of them bringing Covid with them or taking it back home with them.
It wouldn’t be fair to wait any longer to announce this decision. The reason—we wouldn’t want people to make travel and overnight reservations and then lose any money. Or to possibly lose their vacation time.
Catstock is not a money maker. Actually, Catstock costs FFRC money to hold this event. And at this time, we cannot afford to dip into our funds. Finances are very tight and becoming a worry.
I feel very strong in protecting the volunteers. We have not even opened up the Main Area to the public yet. If even one volunteer comes down with the Covid, all volunteers would have to take a two week break from coming. And that means a lot more work for me, which would be difficult.
Bottom line, I do not feel the idea of holding this event is worth the possible ill health to others. It’s not worth it. Our friends and volunteers health are more important. So……we will dream of Catstock 2021!
I didn't copy properly for yesterday's boxes!  Here's the ENVELOPES!

A sad update.  We have lost Louis. This is from a virus.  I had a vet tell me once that a cat can possibly have to deal with 40 different viruses. Some of the common ones are Herpesvirus, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia, Coronavirus, Bordetella bronchiseptica.  And then there's even bacterial infections that cats can get on top of these viruses like Chlamydiosis.

You may also know that we have a step ladder of antibiotics that we use. Remember, antibiotics do not help the initial infection but does help with secondary infections.  We normally start at the bottom of the ladder and move up and also at times combine, as we figure out what works and what doesn't for each particular strain that comes here.

Louis was so young.  We've had a few kittens get this recently, what I presume is the same virus.  So far, Louis is the only one that we will lose.  The others are responding, eating and are playing and acting like silly kittens again. They should do just fine. Louis's death is not in vain.  He was important to us and he was loved.  The way his virus started and ended gave us clues as to how to treat the others.  Louis was such a sweet little kitten soul and is missed.

I also want to give  you an update on Zastria's kittens.  As you know, they were very low birth weights but seemed to take right off.  We have a bit of a worry though.  There are two of them that are lagging behind the other 3--not gaining weight now. In fact, have lost a bit.  They seem to have lost their desire to nurse.  We will keep you posted.

Kittens are all doing great. I love their orniness! I just had Roxi come flying around the corner, leap at warp speed and landed on my keyboard and then she took off the other way running!  Today, Yahtzee, Simpson and Ziva were due for their next vaccines. I couldn't find Yahtzee at all.  I had to go into the house to get a drink and there she was---playing on the floor with Hopey!  Boom Boom's favorite way to eat---right smack in the middle of the plate! Have you noticed CDot's eyes?  Remember when he came in, both were very infected?  Not anymore. Both are crystal clear but as round as can be!  He always has a surprised look to himself!  Mary Sharon's fur is still doing the sticking-out-thing!  I told her it looks like she got an electric shock and stood her hair up on end!  Freedom......what a nut.  He can play nonstop, I swear, for hours! The list could go on and on. Each kitten is unique and wonderful. We love them all.

Working on adoptions!  You all take good care.

Honk honk!  And more honk honks! Our sweet, wonderful Harriet goose was attacked by something Weds. night.  Her long neck was riddled with wounds.  So.........up to the Rescue Center she came.  That bird is one heavy girl!  She went into the grooming tub, had the wounds cleaned up and then rinsed off.  Then she stayed very nicely in the tub while I got her medicines ready.  She took her pookies like a big girl!  She then stayed in June's Room for a few hours so we could make sure she was ok. When it was time to go back outside, I opened the door and she waddled out to the back door then turned around and waddled rather quickly to the purple office!  It was decided she needed carried again!  The cats and kittens weren't quite sure what to think of her!  She spent the rest of the day and nighttime in the big chicken coop--she loved it.  This morning, that door was opened and now she's out on the farmyard again.

We had 2 more adoptions!
Sweet, beautiful VIenne was adopted on 7/22.  She went into a home with two wonderful people that have always enjoyed rescue pets.  I've already seen a picture--Vienne is on the back of the couch napping with one of the dogs in front of the couch, both looking content. So love it when an adult gets adopted!

Briant was also adopted, 7/23.  A family came in and fell for him. But it helped that he was ever so sweet and showed them that he was ready to go home with them!

We have also taken in 2 new cats.
Marietta--calico of white, black, gold colors and a white tip tail! She was found all by herself and wanting some loving, on a road.  The first thing I saw was this kitten on her back, in the crook of an arm, pawing the air with her feet!  Marietta arrived very thin and a few wounds on her back legs.  She is sincerely such a happy girl! She's already in the Main Area, playing with the other kittens. She has a possible hold already.  Her birthday is 5/5/20 and arrived 7/21/20.

Marti--bengal, about 7 1/2 months old. Her birthday is 12/10/19 and she arrived 7/20/20.  She was so very thin when she first was found and full of fleas. She was also very hungry.  Such a beauty. She's thinking about coming out to the Main Area soon.  She too has a possible hold already.

We have thanks to give!

We had a Flash Sale on Weds. to help us with our general bills.  This was wonderful!  We sold everything--all the canvas pictures of our residents and the wonderful homemade soaps/shampoos.  This sale brought in $639.  This takes a big group effort by alot of people--big time thanks.

Remember Cas? That gorgeous kitten that we adopted?  He is now 1 years old and his new family name is Theo. "He and the dogs have become best of friends. They play and sleep together. He seriously was the best fit for our house. He has won everyone over with his silly playful behaviors and the crazy positions he can nap in".  So happy for Theo.

We've been busy showing kittens and cats to families.  We do this in a safe Covid manner.  Each family can have an hour to visit in the back Thumper's Room.  Then we have 15 minutes to clean, before another family can come in.  Hand washing is a must as is wearing a mask.  The Main Area is still closed to the public but the above way of handling families seems to be working just fine.

Bugs, bugs, bugs.  We just lent a hand to help two kittens that had been found but their "finders" wanted to keep them!  Fleas, lice, earmites, cuterebra, roundworms--what an assortment of parasites.  Poor kitties--but will be feeling better and will be neutered.

Monday was our HumaneOhio day--always a good day!  We sent up 50 cats in total.  This broke down to 34 females and 16 males.  This also included 3 of our FFRC cats.  All surgeries went great.  Our 3 cats had good physicals!

We have brand new, newborn kitties! Sunday early afternoon, Zastria left out a soft meow and plop--a kitten was born! Right on the floor by the counter.  She and kitten was quickly scooped up, a box quickly cut down for her and then she was quickly put into the box because another baby was quickly being born!  All in all, she gave birth to 5 kittens.
White/black, male
Calico, female
Black/white pokie dots, male
Black/white, female
White calico, female
Their birth weights were very low--normally kittens are 3-4 ounces each. These five kittens were just 2 ounces. But, mama is feeding them very well and they are already plumping up!

Everyone take good care. Stay healthy. Thank you for caring about the FFRC cats and kittens!

I know the Coronavirus has hit everywhere so hard--healthwise and financially wise.  There was hope that FFRC
would be able to obtain 2 different grants.  But....on the second day of us starting the paperwork, the resources
were dried up---no money left. That means this Fun-Raiser is super doubly appreciated!

We thank everyone who bought tickets, who supplied the items, the mods and admins for putting the word and
video out to everyone, to Marcia for doing all the tickets and to Lynnette for doing all the mailings! It truly takes a
village of our FFRCNation friends to help us.  I am grateful.

And then, we have even more thanks!

for her to be spayed.  Her new mama said that she is adjusting very well. Her new name is
 Zina Moon!

Updates on the cats.  Freedom is doing awesome. We are slowly working his dead nits out of
his fur. He loves to play and if no one is around to  play with him, he is great at entertaining
himself!  CDot and Boom Boom are now in the Main Area full time.
They are both doing very well and have the bellies to prove it! Mary Sharon is also growing.
She has the cutest hair styles--like it's been fizzed up!  So cute. And what a love she is.
Cassiopeia is amazingly wonderful. One of the sweetest kittens ever.

Arch and Otis are still on hold together. Won't be long until they will be abl to leave.

Monday is our HumaneOhio day.  We are hoping to send up Zatria and her three kittens--
Yahtzee, Simpson and Ziva.

Trill is quite comfortable now.  What a gorgeous big boy he is.  He is learning that the
awkwardness of the CH cats is ok--it's nothing that will hurt him.  He really is so very friendly.

Monday we also have our Advisory Board meeting.  A busy week shaping up already.
You all take good care--stay healthy.

Today is the big day---it's the beginning of our Fun-Riaser. We haven't had one since February, due to the Coronavirus.  I've been asked why we didn't do one for these 5 months--we truly didn't think it was wise to do these. So many people have definitely felt the crimp of finances during this very difficult time.  But.....now, we need to get one in, to help us with our finances.  You'll find the info on our FB pages, but here is a quick run-down!

CDot is doing wonderful.  He's growing and his eyes are clear and bright.  He's starting to think about licking food off of his plate. His friend, Boom Boom is doing so much better. Her eyes are open now, although one eye is heavily scarred. Doesn't slow this baby down--she's a corker of energy.

Freedom is such a happy kitten. He can easily play happily by himself or with his kitty friends. All is good in his world! Vienne is feeling so much better. What a difference in her. She's moving about, eating good and is playing now.  Such a pretty girl.

We have a new cat, Trill that was returned. He was originally here 11/16 at 9 months of age. He was adopted 12/2016. He's been in a wonderful home but needs now to find his next home. He came back on 7/7/20. He's 3 1/2 years old. Trill is a big boy, weighing in at #16.14. He's a gold ASH--so very handsome.I remember when he was named Trill--he was always vocalizing, sounding like trills!

We had an FFRC surgery date on Saturday, 7/11. Many thanks to Dr. Darcy, Amber, Lynnette and Becky for helping. Also a big thanks to Joyce D for providing our lunch--very good pizza from Padrone's!  We did 8 surgeries--6 females and 2 males. That makes our total for 2020 now at 563.
Our neuters were: Freedom and a male that belongs to a friend of FFRC's.
Our spays were: Bamboo, Liberty, Cassiopeia, Ecee Rose, Veronica and Taren
All of these physicals were good.  Dr. Darcy also did a check up on the L kittens--Louis, Lauri, Luna Grace and Liberty.  They are doing just fine.

Our sad news on Saturday was our little, sweet Uri. We all know he has been slowing down.  Saturday early morning it was obvious that things were not good. We've said from the very beginning that there were more problems with him than just his Swimmer's Syndrome. In addition to that, he was in heart failure, from a heart defect.  It was with a very heavy heart when we realized we could not ask Uri to put forth anymore effort--he was wore out. Our Uri is in kitty heaven. While our hearts are so sad, we realize that he touched many hearts "out there". His funny attitude, the way he loved to chase the sweeper and the mop, how he played hard with his kitty friends, he loved to put his paws on our face and stare right at us. Ohhhhh, that boy is so missed. Thank you for loving him, along with us.

This Rescue Center has been so blessed to have so many wonderful cats in our present day and in our past. Each are special, each are loved. I am grateful to be doing this rescue work--it's a passion made easier with your help and support. I thank you for that.

Weds., July 8, 2020

Happy HOT days........we are truly having summery days--hot and dry.  Yesterday we had a fast cloud burst of rain and today too.  I saw 4 Porchies damp this afternoon--they seemed to enjoy it!

The animals are faring good in this extreme heat.  The horses and donkey and goat have had the big cottonwood trees for shade. The ducks and geese have their fresh cool water tubs.  The cats are all getting fresh water twice a day--many of the bowls with ice cubes in them! The baby chicklets are all doing great--staying cool with their shaded pen.

We had a Flash Sale today!  This brought in $356!  This will be directly applied to our recently received electric bill.  Many thanks to those that provided the items for this sale and to those that purchased these items.

Finally..........we are going to have a Fun-Raiser, here in July.  Because of the coronavirus, we had made the decision to cancel these events. We didn't want to stress anyone's already stretched budgets or to ask for help more than we had to.  But.......it's time now and FFRC could sure use the help. So....it will be Sunday and ends on Thursday at 9 am.  BOXES will be at 1:00, followed by the Fun-Raiser. And of course, we will have consolation prizes!  Join us for the fun!  Check out our different fb pages for the info---this should be posted probably on this weekend. There will also be a video of the items on the cam.

We have thanks to give!  YOU are super appreciated.

We have had a change of dates for our next FFRC surgery.  It's THIS Saturday!  We've started preparing the surgery list--looks like more spays than neuters for this day.  We will also have a few physicals too. Uri will have another check up by Dr. Darcy as well.

Uri is doing better though--he's eating and drinking good.  We've been aware from the get-go that he probably has some neurological problems, along with his Swimmer's Syndrome.  That doesn't mean he isn't able to enjoy a good life. He is a happy boy, so sweet, loves to purr and loves to be held.

We've had 7 cats/kittens that have been adopted!
Minnie--adopted 7/3. She went into a home where she will be the only cat and will have lots of TLC given to her.  She has given so much to all of the kittens here, now it's her turn to receive!

Chlorebear & Raphael--adopted 7/4.  These two kittens went into a home where there was a need to have kittens to love, after losing a much loved cat.

Chico--adopted 7/7.  His new mama (and her family) had visited Chico many times before he was big enough to be neutered and to be adopted. Chico loves his new mama!

Auro--adopted 7/7.  This was another kitten that was visited by her new family several times before she was big enough to be spayed and on her way to her new home!  Her new name is Starlight.

Remember, we talked about Caleb and Norton--they were returned but were "readopted" by their mom and dad that had them all their lives.  The problem bringing them back to FFRC was resolved and so they quickly scooped them up again.  I don't know who was happier--the humans or the cats!  It was ever so sweet.

Updates on the newbies!  Mary Sharon is doing wonderful. She always makes me smile when I see her fluffed up fur!  What a sweet girl she is. Veronica is a bit shy--she loves to be held but that initial getting her is scary for her.  I suppose if I'd been thrown from a car, I'd be worried about life too.  We just need to pile more TLC on her!  Mesa is a sweetheart. She's adventurous, sweet and super friendly. No more lice problems for her!

CDot has a friend!  Her name is Boom Boom.  She's a calico with a sweetness about her. She arrived on 7/6 at 4 weeks old.  She weighed 8 ounces. Boom Boom's birthday is 6/8/20.  She's rather a fiesty girl, deserving of her name!  She's really sweet but let's us know she doesn't appreciate having her face washed numerous times a day.  She arrived after a couple heard some meows coming from a trash container (and you know how very hot it's been here).  They retrieved her from the bottom of the trash container.  She has very infected eyes. One eye has some permanent damage. And a very sore bum from diarrhea.  After being on meds for a day, we put her with CDot. The first thing they did was to lick and lick each other--so good to see that!

We also took on 4 more kittens.  Their mama was spayed thru our HumaneOhio event.  Our promise was--if you get her spayed, we will take the kittens.  Their birthday is 5/11/20 and they arrived on 7/6/20.
Luna Grace--female, black tiger/white, white splotch left hip, pink nose  2.01#
Louis--male, brown tiger/white, white splotch on left ribcage 1.14#
Liberty--female, brown tiger  1.14#
Laurie--torti--female, torti with cream whiskerpads.  1.15#
These are all Name a Cat names. These kittens are in the back Thumper's Room, along with the kittens from the abandoned home and Freedom.

This past Monday, we had another HumaneOhio spay/neuter day.  We sent 46 cats to Toledo!  This broke down to 29 females and 17 males. Our total so far for 2020 is 555.  This breaks down to 322 females and 233 males.  Plus, 1 dog!  Many thanks to Lynnette, Debbie, Gem and Becky M for helping with this event.

You know, we try so so hard here at FFRC to help as many cats and kittens that we possibly can.  Space, finances, physical help all play a part in how many we can take.  We are trying to do our part to help with the cat/kitten overpopulation problem.  But.....truth is, there is only so much that we can do.  This takes community help too.  Sometimes people gets upset with us because we cannot take their 20 kittens that have been born this past spring or the 13 cats that their neighbor had born last year who are now having babies of their own or the 16 cats that their friend is feeding on their back porch and are now bringing up their spring kittens.  It has to be realized we cannot take in this quantity of cats and kittens.  We try our darndest though to help as many as we can here at FFRC and to offer low cost spays/neuters twice a month thru HumaneOhio. And ALL of our FFRC cats are spayed/neutered before adoption.  But, we need everyone's help.  It can't fall on just this Rescue to fix all of these problems. We need help.  Reach out and get a cat spayed or neutered. It truly does make a difference.  If you go through our HumaneOhio program, it's only $35 for an outside cat (male or female), which includes a vet physical, a 24 hour soreness med, the spay/neuter and a rabies vaccine. Please, we need help.  Be a part of the solution and reach out and help bring down the suffering that happens from this overpopulation problem. Thank you.

A big thank you to Johns Manville for their donation to FFRC, to help us continue our work.  Love that community help!

Okay--now for the outgoing and the incoming!
Ralphie--adopted 7/1.  He went to a home where is the sole cat and will have tons of TLC!
Conrad--adopted in June by FFRC, to be a Porchie.  He decided on his own that he was simply not going to be an inside cat (he had always been an outside cat).

Incoming:
6/28--Vienne arrived, a lynx point Siamese.  She was from a trailer park here in Defiance and in need of a home.  She is 1 1/2 years old, born 12/10/18. She weighed 6.05 and has the prettiest blue eyes.  What a sweet girl that is so enjoying being pets and her soft beds.

6/29--Mary Sharon arrived, a long hair torti. Her fur is so pretty--has some silvery grey/white wisps in her tortiness. She arrived at 1 lb, 4 1/2 weeks old. She made her presence known by toddling thru our local emergency room entrance door. She loves to purr.

7/1--Veronica arrived, a beautiful long hair black tiger with 4 white feet and chest.  She simply appeared in someone's yard--no mama or siblings. I feel she was tossed from a car as she has the traditional "dropped lower lip" from landing on her face plus lacerations around her right eye.  She also has earmites and was very hungry. She weighs 2.07 and has a birthday of 4/22/20.

7/1--Mesa arrived, a black kitten. She arrived at 2.08 lbs, 10 weeks old. She came with lice and earmites.  Lice are taken care of, earmites continue to be worked on. She was found at a summer ice cream depot. She sure loves to play!
These are all Name a Cat names. These 4 kittens above will be out in the Main Area soon.

7/2--CDot arrived, a very small orange kitten that really needed some help.  He has white toesies! He weighed a mere 7 ounces yesterday, arrived dehydrated, super thin, severe earmites, an upper respiratory infection. He was also having trouble dealing with this heat. He received sq fluids, oral fluids, ear wash, antibiotics and a warm bed to cuddle down in, along with his purple mama.  Today he is a bit stronger and has eaten a good breakfast, by syringe feeding.

These next 5 cats (4 kittens/1 cat) arrived yesterday, 7/2. They had been abandoned in their home that was extremely trashed.  When cats are not even provided a speck of cat litter, what is to be expected other than to potty wherever they can?  But.... no more.  These cats all received a bubble cleansing bath, had tons of fleas removed and given good healthy food.  They also received a promise that they would always be given love and care and clean litterboxes.  Every single one of them have used their litterboxes since they have arrived.

Beauty--beige adult female, birthday 3/12/19  mama to Briant
Briant--beige, birthday 4/2/20, male
GG--gold tiger/white, birthday 5/14/20, male
Taran--tiger/torti, birthday 5/14/20, female
Bamboo--brown tiger/white, white tip tail, born 5/14/20, female

We were made aware of where Beauty's other kittens went and FFRC has offered free spays/neuters for those kittens.  All names are from the Name a Cat list.
These kittens/cat are in the back Thumper's Room, enjoying their toys, clean bedding, fluffy beds and generally are relaxing and enjoying themselves.  I don't think it will take them long to come up to the Main Area.

We have also taken 2 adult cats back to FFRC--Norton and Caleb. They were adopted in 2015 as kittens.  They went to a wonderful home. Their parents were truck drivers together and have a huge semi that was spacious and allowed the cats to travel around the countryside with them!  They have seen parts of the USA that I haven't!  But, unfortunately, they needed to return them and of course, we are happy to take them back. They are both in the Kitty Campus room, adjusting/
Norton, born 8/21/14, adopted 2/6/15, ASH, black tiger, no white
Caleb, born 9/12/14, adopted 2/6/15, grey tiger/white
Super nice cats--they just will need a little time to get use to FFRC life.

Monday is our HumaneOhio surgery day. We would like to send a few of our FFRC kittens so they can then get to their promised homes!  On Saturday, the 18th, we will have our FFRC surgery day and get more of our cats and kittens spayed/neutered.

I've heard back from Bluster and Carolina--they are settling in and have definitely become good friends together.

All is good here. Kittens are growing and the adults are happy and healthy!  You all take care and stay healthy.  Lots of new names to remember!
