We still have cats on hold, soon to be adopted! They are Sita, Penny Lane, Tux, Tangerine, Jandar. All kittens will get a Purple Mama to go with them, to help them with adjusting to a new home.
Yes, our numbers are coming down at FFRC. This happens every wintertime. Kittens are adopted. This gives the teenagers and adults a chance to find a home. And then........the kittens come again. In the meantime though, we are spaying and neutering as many as we can. There is still such an overabundance of cats that do not have a possibility of having homes. We WANT to be a part of helping reduce the overpopulation problem.
As you know, we have many of the red heat lamps out in the areas for the Porchies, Firecats, Barnies and Covies. This morning during breakfast time, I saw two cats--Cooper and Kerry laying flat on their backs under the lamps, warming their tummies! The outside cats are all doing well. They get fed a light breakfast, a lunch and then a supper. They also have dry food available all the time.
I was asked recently what all we do for our newbie arrivals. Since it's been a while since we've listed these things, here goes:
All incoming kittens/cats:
leukemia/fiv/heartworm test, pyrantal wormer, capstar, cleansing bath, nails trimmed, ears cleaned, bordetella vaccine, weight.
Soon after arrival:
1st distemper vaccine, 1st of 7 daily doses of Panacur
As time goes on:
2nd distemper (and sometimes a third, depends on age), a second leuk/fiv/heartworm test (4 weeks after arrival), 4 pyrantal wormers (10-14 days apart), flea prevention, continued ear cleanings, 1st leukemia vaccine (repeat in 3 weeks), wormer for tapeworms (different than the other wormers), tracking of weight gains
From the vet:
physical, spay or neuter and advise on any problems
Possibly two adoptions today!
