Friday, July 6

Hi everyone! I am ecstatic! The power is back on, after our big storm. It's been a week today. The power outage coincided with some of the highest temperature breaking days we've ever had. It'll take a bit to get the temp from 95 here in the rescue center down to 75. Today is another hot one--predicted 105 without the heat index involved.

Of course, the cam went down the second the power went out. I had no idea the storm was going to be as bad as it was. The weather band radio was surprised too!! Actually, during the height of the storm, I ran out onto the new parking lot to check how the water drainage was going for the new parking lot. It was perfect. Gushing water was going from 1 drain to the other and pouring into the river. Kitty City was dry--absolutely not a drop of water came in! A successful project.

We had one tree and a few several hundred smaller branches come down. We were fortunate that we had no damage to the rescue center or our home. The power line guys all deserve a lot of credit. They had hundreds of poles to replace, hundreds of miles of lines to string, substations to replace..... and doing this in all the heat. They are heroes to me.

My heart is full of gratitude to so many people who have helped us get thru this very difficult time. Judy S and her husband immediately brought over their generator (dubbed Jenna Radar) on Saturday. We were able to plug in the 4 refrigerator/freezers and have a few lights and fans on for the rescue center. But, the heat and humidity was still tough to take. People would drive right up and drop off bags of ice several times every day. We used this to fill all water bowls, even for the chickens and ducks. We almost lost 6 of our baby chickens, but they have survived. The dogs had a little wading pool to help cool off. All the cats and kittens could be seen licking ice cubes. The Cat's Cove and Sunporch cats really were very warm--they received ice cubed water 3 times daily. Any extra ice was put on the floor of the Cat's Cove, which almost immediately melted, but helped a little to cool them.

People also brought us jugs of water which helped immensely. We could use our pump, but very sparingly. We kept up with the cleaning, thanks to the incoming water! On Thursday, the water pump broke down, so not even a trickle of water could be had. Memmer's came fairly quickly to fix it--extra thanks to them. They also have full repair schedules to help people, but they squeaked us in!

Because of the extreme heat, the rescue center was maintaining a temperature of 95 degrees. We had flat cats here--they were staying low, very little playing, trying to keep cool. Our Berry friends, brought us their spare generator on Thursday, in the very early morning. We immediately were able to hook up 2 window air conditioners which made it possible to get the temperature down to 85 in the rescue center. This generator is dubbed Berry Chill. Many thanks.

If it were not for these 2 generators, we would have had to move all the cats to a cooler location. As hot and humid as it's been in the rescue center, it would've been much worse. Their 102 degree bodies can certainly keep a place hot!

We never got behind in the laundry either. Every morning, volunteers came and whisked the entire amount of laundry away and brought it all back in the evening--all clean and folded.

We had so much support and prayers, all of which helped us thru. And the webcam viewers have offered tremendous support. I know it was difficult not seeing the cats and kittens for a whole week. I also know you were all concerned for our health and safety. I thank you for your patience and support. Thanks too to our volunteers and friends that kept you all updated with facebook entries, blog entries and pictures and videos of the cats here. These are the things that test our faith, patience and endurance. We have survived!

The cats and kittens are running around this morning like nothing happened! Mariska is wonderful--she hasn't a worry in her life. So athletic. It's amazing what she is doing--literally climbing everywhere and running like the wind. McLovin' is also doing great. He's had an extra hard time with the heat this week, but today is feeling much better and is playing. That little Bravo is a regular kitten. He has no idea that he is different than the others. There's barely anything he can't do. Those rear legs definitely get in his way and that is frustrating to him, but he's patient at figuring things out. He and McLovin' are still good friends. Graciela is also doing great--is growing and into everything!

The oldsters--Bondi, Megentta, Ada Jane and Putter are fine and faired well this week. All 4 liked to lick the ice cubes. I'll admit it's been a rough week, we've had some ups and downs and many problems to figure out as to how to get thru this week. But, we've done it! We know though that without all the outside help, it would have been very very difficult. I'm a grateful person!

We took in several new kittens during this past week. First, were the 3 that came in on the storm day. They were in a very full drainage pipe. Their names are Tiki (grey, male), Tabithaa (grey/white, female) and Tallulah (black/white, female). They are about 7 weeks old now. We also took in 2 brothers which were found in the woods. They are so sweet. Gib (beige/white) and Everett (black), about 9 weeks old. These names were all taken from the Name that Cat, from the Catathon.

We also took in Derecho (named after the weather storm that hit us). He is a grey tiger/white, about 7 weeks old. He was born in a woodpile. His mama and 2 siblings left him after he could no longer keep up with them. He has neurological problems, which very possibly could be cerebellar hypoplasia. This is when cats are born with a brain disease that leaves them wobbly and unsteady, but can usually lead a healthy indoor life with help. Common signs include tremors, unusual jerky movements and falling down. The most common source of this disorder is by mama having distemper (aka panleukopenia)during the time when babies were being formed. It causes an undeveloped cerebellum. The cerebellum is the portion of the brain responsible for fine motor control. He knows nothing is "different" about him and does his best to do what a normal kitty does. This is NOT a contagious thing that we need worry about.

Happy wonderful news is that Ernestine and Meggie were adopted together. We had opened June's Room door at the beginning of the week. Both Meggie and Alphie immediately came out and explored. The neat thing is that Ernestine was very tolerant of Meggie. I am thrilled they were able to be adopted. I heard from the family yesterday and they have been enjoying the bay window and sliding patio doors that overlook their bird feeding stations.

We have survived this week and have learned much in way of being grateful, having patience and knowing we have many friends that support us. We will have the cam up and running today, about mid-morning! The cats have lots to tell you!! The cats extra love our volunteers for seeing us thru this week. They are an awesome bunch of people.

bella
Bella spent a lot of time in the outdoor enclosure, trying to stay cool this week.
Peacock
Our 2 male peacocks have dropped hundreds of their beautiful tail feathers this week. We always collect them and give them out at adoption times. This is about 4 weeks ahead of schedule. This picture is of Shawn, the #1 boss peacock.

Tuesday July 4 - Remote status update from Jacci

Hi everyone - it's lenz (the web guy) - I have a late in the day official update from Jacci - I will be paraaphrasing but it all comes from her! Thinks are good (But hot as heck!) at the center... Flat cats everywhere!

Happy 4th of July to all! Dont worry too much about us!

- From Jacci - Paraphrased - ...

Everything is going good but it is hotter than hot – we recorded 94 degrees inside the rescue center – INSIDE! We are wilting! But continuing on...

Cats are all flat cats during the day – They know how to handle this heat - they are all sprawled out to dissapate their body heat which is great but you gotta watch out for flat cats as you walk though the center...we do have the window and door open to the outdoor enclosure so they can go out there but even then they flatten out!

The three new new kitties now have names – the 2 girls are tabitha and tallulah – and the boy is tiki – those names came from the "Name a cat" portion of the "Cat-a-thon"… They are doing great and will be moved in to the main center soon - they are still very small so there is no hurry...

Door to junes room is open, which means that alphie and meggie are both out and about and doing good in the general population.

there arte two adoptions pending on some adult cats, but more on that later... You understand...

And there are 3 other cat adoptions on hold right now... Queen, Daymo and Sugar Plum...

BIG TIME Thanks so much for all the help and support during this time, This power outage is testing us to our limits... But we have had folks stop by and doing the laundry – bringing ice and water – The chickens have a had watermelon every day – Today we almost lost 6 chickens but thanks to the help we cooled them down and they are fine.

Jennaradar is doing her job really well – thanks to everyone who has donated to feed her…

Per the advice of the cammers jacci has opened boxes for item that were needed. When the cam is back up jacci will go over donations. It might be in the form of a recorded message or a th end of a boxes broadcast. If something came in during the outage keep in mind it was 100 degrees during the outage! This is lenz talking. Its hot. if she misses a box or donation - dont be offended. She is trying to keep track.

Her own words "We are sweating like little piggies and I usually dont whine – but its hot enough without AC to whine so I did a little last night" – In my opinion she deserved to…

More in her own words... "Cats are not playing much – bravo is doing well – but the vet consult was that bravo would be better off without his rear legs… Jacci stresses personally that he will do better after surgery..."

Skip this and know Bravo will be fine (read it for details) "his left femur is smashed beyond repaid – which is why that leg is useless and the right leg is malformed beyond repair. Both are more of a hindrance – he is not using them at all – they are in his way – the right leg alone is confirmed as a painful situation – surgery will be scheduled after he is 2 pounds – he is already doing every things the other kitties do – he will be fine after this surgery – this decision was not made lightly – based on his long term health and being comfortable. As awful as it is the removal of both legs is in his best interest they wiil use the thigh muscles to build a pad for him to scoot around better… Regardless he will be fine – BRAVO the brave…

He is a tought little booger at 1 lb 8 oz – he gets something in his head and will not will quit - BRAVO THE BRVAVE - BTW - Mariska and mclovin are both healing very well

FYI - Farrah is doing GREAT on her FULL dose of meds (She's had it tonight) – her tongue got chewed up during the seizure a few days ago but has healed up really well already...

Tuesday July 2 - Remote status update from Jacci

Hi everyone its lenz (web guy) – I just had a nice talk with Jacci and she wanted me to pass along an update…

I wanted to mention to everyone that at this point Jacci can only check her email from her cell phone – with its tiny keys and power at a premium its just not practical to do that. They may not have power there till the 7th and by then the email is going to get piled up. Please be understanding if you don't get a response or refrain from emailing the center as we won't be able to even look at them till the 7th.

all is well

"As you all well know been without power since the storms that hit Ohio last Friday. Since we are in a rural area getting all the lines damaged by the storm fixed is taking a long time. Folks who want to know how we are doing have asked why we are not answering our phone. Since we don't have power we don't have phone service, nor internet access, or even air-conditioning. We do have a generator and we are using it to power our refrigerators, fans and well pump.

Diane

We are struggling in the sweltering heat but we have had people stopping by bringing water and ice and even some watermelons for the chicken and ducks.

Do not be alarmed, but Farrah had major seizure this morning – she fell from the top rail but fortunately Lisa was close by and  broke her fall a bit – but it was a long drop and she did hit rather hard when she landed. Normally it only takes her about 25 minutes to recover but it took her a couple of hours to recover… So we are going to up her meds to full strength.

And now some good news

The 3 newbie kittens are now down playing in thumpers room, having fun - - no names but we will be naming them soon…

ice water

McLovin' and Graciella are now in the main room playing with everyone and they are still best friends.

Bravo is still a tough little kitty running around like the wind. He has a noon appointment with the vet to tomorrow to talk about his back leg. Well Bravo won't be doing the talking but you know what I meant.

The center has received the $5000 check from winning the Animal Rescue Site  Shelter Challenge.

Voting starts up again Monday July 9 at The Animal Rescue Site – we are eligible only for a weekly prize – but would love to have you vote for us none the less…

Friday, June 29

Our little McLovin' did just great with his surgery yesterday. His front right leg was removed (the nerve was 100% severed). He's already been playing with his pen buddy--Graciella. His right eye is also a little droopy from nerve problems, but hopefully will improve. His rear right leg seems to have recovered 100% already. Now, about his chin injury from being tossed from the car. This was one of the most severe chin injuries I've seen (where lip and chin is torn away from gum line). The skin was dry upon arrival, which makes it sometimes impossible to repair. Dr. Amanda worked and worked and worked on it yesterday and did a phenomenal job on it. He has a little button right now on it to keep everything in place, but should have a decent looking and workable chin/lip when healed! I was so happy about that.

Graciella is a tiny torti girl that was brought in the same day as McLovin'. She was found in our local cemetery and was crying and crying. A person saw her, but didn't want to pick her up for fear that her mama was still there. But, after following them quite a ways, she was picked up and brought here. Unbelievable the distance she followed them on those tiny legs. I could not do a leukemia/FIV test on her until yesteday as she was dehydrated. But, that test is now done and is negative. She loves to cuddle with McLovin'.

Azar has been moved to Thumper's Room. But, that door is open, which gives him access to the front Welcome Room office. The reason for this decision was that he was mighty rough on the kittens and adult cats yesterday. He's a loverbug to people, but super hard on the cats. Because of the fear of actual bodily harm happening, he was put in these two rooms. He's perfectly happy there and is enjoying the people.

We had a package last night from Amsprinkle. It was quite a few of those neck coolers. She made these and they're awesome. Just soak in water, the little beads inside swell up, then freeze them. Put around the neck and they help keep you cool. It was 106 degrees yesterday. Other than last week's 1/2 hour rain, we haven't had rain for over 2 months. It's soooo hot here. This week will continue to be in the mid to upper 90's, with no rain. Thanks to these and the sunscreen that was sent to us and a new fan being sent for the Cat's Cove cats, we should be good! Thanks to all for caring.

The second order of t-shirts have arrived. Within a few days, we should have all the backorders of shirts sent out. Be patient--we'll get them out! I already have a 3rd order placed as of 10 days ago.
Zavatar
Zavatar enjoying the outdoor porch enclosure. Such a great cat.

Thursday, June 28

We're getting it done! 95% of the boxing up and mailing out is done from the Catathon. I'm still floating and cannot wait to go in and pay that Parking Lot bill in full. That will be a very good feeling. I also got an invoice from the company that did our T-shirts. It sounds like that shipment may possibly be here today or tomorrow. We're also ready to send those shirt out--the envelopes are already addressed, just waiting to be filled and mailed!

We took in another kitten. His name is McLovin'. He's orange/white, long hair, about 10 weeks old. He has the typical signs of being thrown out of a car. Kittens don't generally put their legs out on a fall, but land on their face. McLovin's lower lip is down to his chin. Unfortunately, this cannot be repaired, as the skin is already dry. He also sustained a severed nerve to a front leg--resulting in the need for an amputation so he doesn't drag that leg around for life. His surgery is scheduled for today. He's an awesome kitten--a real sweetie and purrbox. Sigrid is taking him to the vets this morning.

Mariska is doing awesome. She can climb up the poles that are covered in hemp rope--right up she goes--I never tire of watching her. Badu has now spent 2 nights in Kitty Kastle, with Nikka and has done beautifully!

Azar has been returned to the rescue center. He is out and about in the main area. The family that adopted him has worked on adjustment issues in regards to their resident cat, but in the end made the difficult decision to return Azar. Remember, he was an outside cat, that we're trying to convert to an inside cat. We'll see how this goes.

Sumer had her surgery yesterday. She and Buttons are still with the family that was keeping these 2 cats during the Catathon. Sumer--we were having major issues trying to keep her inside (she had been found as an outside cat). Buttons went to visit Sumer during the busy time of the Catathon, because of a newly developed pottying issue. She is doing well there. We should get both back after Sumer is recovered from her surgery.

We had BOXES last night! It was fun, and it's oh so good to have that food cabinet looking stocked again!
Greg & Tiffany--5 cases of Royal Canin Kitten canned food, 5 cases of Friskies bits, 5 cases of Friskies Poultry, 5 cases of Friskies Seafood, 3 large bags of Royal Canin Dry Kitten food. So very grateful for this.
Lillian--2 cases of Friskies canned food--our food cabinet is looking good.

They are awesome and have been placed outside the front office door. 1 rock with her chat name & state, one with her daughter's chat name & state, and the bigger rock with FFRC logo and establishment date.
The Bubbas--6 pillow cases, q-tips, bird treats and perch covers for Einie, Fancy Feast Appetizers, Trailmix & ashews for volunteers, recipe journal, kitty toys, Appetizers, and dog treats and lots of books for the volunteers

The box: many small & big paper plates, a case of Friskies canned, 5 cans of canned chicken, 20 cans of tuna, 2 cans of Easy Cheese, 50 cans of sardines, a box of Turtle Candies, and many kinds of volunteer treats
AbbyTabbysMama--a PayPal donation, in memory of her Bailey's birthday, who lost her battle against a rare feline intestinal cancer in 2003, at age 10 months and left a huge hole in her mama's heart.

Bravo has an appointment next week on Tuesday, at 10:00 for a consultation regarding his rear legs. Daymo and Sugar Plum are on hold together--to go to the same family. Remember, Queenie is also still on hold. Alfie and Meggie are doing good. They both love their heads to be rubbed and a good back scratching. They are both now in June's Room and seem to be comfortable there. The next step for them is when we open their door to have access to the main area. Spruce, Purrdue and Purkins, all 3 brown tigers, have been playing for a full 10 minutes with pushing a ball around the Track Ball Toy. The 4 little blacks--Raymond, Raymondo, Faleen and Faleena all have fuzzy fur. Their fur seems to be getting to the medium length.

A goal of mine soon, is to get PetFinders caught up. Now that the Catathon is over and the mailing almost complete, it's time to get that done.
Martha Ann
Martha Ann is a friend to all the kittens and cats, and of course to us 2-legged friends too!

Tuesday, June 26

The cats are wonderful. Zelda Belda continues her desk statue act. She's my paperweight. Unfortunately, the kittens love it here too. They are not paperweights, but whirlwinds, stirring up all the other paper. And they LOVE taking my pens. I'm forever fishing the pens out from under the desk. I keep saying to PLEASE let papers and pens alone, but it falls on deaf ears. Oh well....I secretly love it!

Bella has had two bouts of super speed this morning. She loves scooting on this floor--she can get going pretty fast--ears even laid back. I swear she smiles doing this! Little Bravo must be taking lessons. He's doing pretty good scooting around too. Bless his heart--he's got the smaller litterboxes figured out. He can hoist himself into them. His front legs are so strong. Next week, I'd like to get him to our vets for consulations. That right back leg, from knee down is unusable. He gets it under his tummy and pulls it along. His left rear leg, the one that is stiff, straight out, has been turning also under his tummy, coming out on the other side. So, I want to keep watching him and figuring out what would be best for him. His spirit is strong--he's a toughie. He still collects toys, litter, dust bunnies in his "tummy tray".

The cats spent many hours yesterday on the outdoor enclosure. It was a beautiful day. Tomorrow it's suppose to be 103. Wow--now, that's hot! I love how the kittens and cats find the sunshine coming in the various windows.

We had a very busy day yesterday. Spent many hours, by many people, packing up the orders from the Catathon! This will go on for this whole week yet, I'm sure. I get so excited to see where all these items are going!

We prefer to keep names anonymous on the winning bids, but I would like to mention some extra thanks: The bunkbeds were donated back to the kitties and they love it. Bella likes the lower bunk! The kitty basket was donated back, to give to the next adoptive family. The ruby/diamond jewelry was donated back, to be given to 2 volunteers by a drawing. The Betty Jane Carter doll was donated back, to be used for the Catstock Event. The Alaskan basket was donated back to be dispersed between volunteers and my mom. The cat wheel too was redonated to FFRC! So, one will go to Cat's Cove, the other here in the main area. A box of awesome items was sent to FFRC, to be put in for a drawing for the volunteers also--we'll be doing that this week. We're so grateful!

We love snacks & food here, so we need to also thank those wonderful people who made sure we had kinishes, pizza, pizza bread, chicken wings, cookies, fresh doughnuts and muffins, and tasty breads. We loved all that extra attention!

I would like to ask for your patience as these many items that are being sent are received. We literally have over a thousand papers to sort. We have the original PayPal forms, checks to match up with orders, PayPal sometimes sends a reminder that a payment was sent, e-mails from 2 accounts, etc. All in all, it's a lot of paper! We are trying very hard to match everything up. If you by chance get a duplicated order, if you want to send it back, I will gladly reimburse you for the postage! Just let me know. If there is an error in your order and you didn't receive what you should've, just let me know.

We are still adding names for Sponsor a Cat and the Name that Cat to Canton's website at catandninetails.com There will be quite a few names added this evening, but then, if you notice your info is missing, please let me know.

We had BOXES last night! It was fun and we loved the donations.

Geoffrey M--donation thru PayPal for FFRC
