Tuesday, April.16

Busy in the front, busy in the back! The guys are digging out front. We will never have to worry about water coming in again. They are digging a line, to lay a drainage pipe from around Kitty Kabana to the drainage ditch in the front by the road. Problem solved!

The "mudders" are also here. They are on tall stilt legs, working on the ceiling. As soon as the prep is done, they'll be spraying the ceilings. Give it a day to dry and then the ceiling can be painted! Progress is being made.

Our 6 little kittens Caliboo, Calidora, Bixley, Bix, Jemison and Remison are doing great. They are eating about 80% on their own now. Sloppy little kitties! Oh well, we love them anyway! They are playing so much more now and climbing. Then when they sleep, they are out like a rock! Such cute babies.

Kitty Q and Catsparella's babies are also doing great. They all have round tummies. Mommies are feeling good too. Not being too restless in their rooms.

We took in a little black/white kitten yesterday. He's about 5-6 weeks old and very thin. He came from a place that has been abandoned. Cats and kittens abound there. I talked to the lady who has been going over to feed them about trapping them. Maybe this will happen--sure hope so. But this little one is safe. He's got a bit of a cold, but workable. He'll be named soon.

We also took in another mama and her five kittens yesterday. They were left in a soft crate at the door overnight. Mama is a torti, young and very friendly. Her 5 kittens are about 4 weeks old. We have 1 tiger/white (male) and 1 orange tiger (female) and 3 orange/white tigers (1 girl and 2 boys). Pretty cute babies! They too have been tested and are negative.

Wonderful news about Mira. A family called looking for their missing cat. I always ask people that are bringing healthy looking cats in, if they are SURE that the cat doesn't have a home. Apparently, Mira has a home, verified by a picture. So, she is going to become an inside cat now. Yes, she is pregnant. After the kitties are 6 weeks old, FFRC will pay for her spay and check up. She seemed to be happy to see her family!

Latest on Linden, Buckeye and Cypress: All is well! Yes, these three boys have adjusted. The biggest help is that they are together and their new family is patient. But, things sound really good there.

We had BOXES last night! We are a big happy, thankful group to you!

There have been lots and lots of questions and "wonderings" about the ustream ads. Clay and I have posted a new post in our website labeled Ustream Crisis. Go to it, read it, and see if this helps with some of the explanation of what's going on. Unfortunately, there's not a lot we can change at the moment. Rest assured that we are working on this problem. Check for updates daily as we will do our best to keep things posted for you. Thank you.

We have a Petfinder update! Our top 12 cats that have been viewed are: Linden, Zelda, Goodness, Raza, Tabitha, Maui, Haylow, Preakness, Octavia, Tizzie, Spruce and Dove.

I overheard Pania and Cutie arguing this morning as to who is the prettiest--they finally called it a tie! They're both beautiful!

Sunday, May 5

What a beautiful Sunday! Right now, the 6 kittens are out in the main area, walking and running around a bit while it's quiet here. That little Bix is so much tinier than the other 5, but he can keep up with his siblings! They are becoming better plate eaters. We're still syringe feeding yet just to make sure their tummies are full.

We opened the door to June's Room so Kitty Q could come out and stretch her legs. Little Pumpkin followed her mama right out the door, for her first adventure in the main area. Oh my goodness--those two kittens, Pumpkin and Ginger have the roundest tummies. Yesterday, the 6 kittens visited Kitty Q for an hour of mothering from her.

We had our 24 hour bid auction for the drawer/bed end at 6 pm. I want to thank Joni (catlady) and Angie (a volunteer) for making these awesome drawerbeds. Also a big thanks to Mary Braid (a volunteer) for sewing the covers for the cushions in the beds. Many thanks to:
Janarama00/Janice--bed A for $115
Crittercat/Michelle B--bed B for $77
SVCathy/Catherine--bed C for $160
Janarama00/Janice--bed D for $75
Steffer48/Stephanie--bed E for $125
jbv6109/Jackie--bed F for $125, who has now donated this bed to Jimmy's daughter that adopted a cat from FFRC!
Big thanks too to Cantoncat and Gusti for donating $20 each, for each drawer to cover the shipping charges. So very very nice of them to do this. For this 24 hour auction, we had 78 bids from 22 different bidders!  The total for this auction is $677. I'm so very grateful.

Next, we had our LIVE afghan auction. Big thanks to Rosemary B from South Africa for making this afghan. It is beautiful. The bidding on this afghan was hot and heavy!! We had 48 bids on this afghan from 11 different chatters. We sure did have some fun! The top bidder was PrissyPurdue from CA for $485. Then we had Furkitty and Eartheyes each donate $15 to put us at $515! What a thrill. I am so grateful for this support. Thank you!

We also had BOXES and envelopes last night.

Bonnie R from TX--a donation for FFRC for the sardine fun!
(See...we're still having sardine fun!)
Dawnstar--for Catathon: BANNED stickers!

The six little kittens are now tucked back into their pen. The instant they felt the heaters, off they went to nappy time. They are the sweetest babies! Weeja is wonderful. She is such a beauty and loves to play. Almost every morning when I open the cabinet above the counter, there is Tabitha--fast asleep on some wadded up paper towels that she has moved around to make a good bed!

Ruthie Ann has ventured out to the Kitty Kabana room now a couple times. She's a bit of a shy girl, but sure loves those ear rubs. Snappy loves playing with the babies--I think it makes him feel like a big brother. Joyful came out on her own from the Welcome Room office to the main area yesterday. Wasn't for long--she just wanted a look-see. What a beauty she is.

I talked to the woodie's family late last night--things are going pretty well. Linden is now out and about and jumped up on the couch to lay with his brothers. What a beautiful site that must've been.

Montana is all decked out for a special day!
Montana

Saturday, May 4, 2013

Linden joined his brothers yesterday! It's official--the three woodie boys are together. Buckeye and Cypress are doing awesome. It took them a bit of time to adjust to their new home, but it has happened and they are happy. Linden was very nervous, but it was nice to see the three of them touch noses and recognize each other! I'm sure Linden will relax fairly quickly with the help of his brothers!

Our new girl, Mira is wonderful. Such a sweetie. We showed her to the cam yesterday. It's pretty obvious she has been an outside cat as she tries hard to get out the door. Let's hope that we can help her realize that indoor living is much better and safer. I walked in the house this morning, and who did I see basking in the sun on the back of the couch but Montana! Didn't even know he had gotten inside the house. He was playing on the cat furniture yesterday, not standing up at all, but pulling himself all over the different levels--we all laughed at his fun!

We had BOXES last night. Thank you so much for these gifts.
Lillian D--donation thru PayPal for the sardine challenge
Gusti from Germany--part of shipping costs for the 6 beds that are being auctioned right now
Brooke B, a day visitor, from Columbus--Cat nip toys, big rat cat toy, treats for the volunteers, Whiska packs for Octavia and friends, dry cat food. She also gave a wonderful card and seashells for the rock garden.
Michelle M/kittycanada1 with Justin & Casey/Purr Meow--Mother's Day card--so nice
Hannah and mom Jennifer--Skippy John Jones kitty card, 2 bottles Tide HE, large pkg kitty wipes, PB&J crackers, mountain travel mix goodies and 24 jars of baby food  Hugs to you, Hannah!
Vixanna R/bagobear from IL--For the Catathon: box of quilting, packages of fat quarter material, cookie cutters, Quilter book of patterns & desserts, 4 winnie the Pooh fat quarters, 2 rolls of kitty material, scrubbers & hot pads for the kitchen
Sheila H/oilsandsgirl--case of appetizers, fancy feast kitten can, medley canned food, a bag of Royal Canin baby cat dry and a whole case of Pampers kitty wipes
Jeanette B & Fur Haven kitties--case of Evo chicken & turkey for Gallant
Linda S/nokittymama--4 bags of Royal Canin baby cat dry
Debra M/kittymama2--pictures of Angel 6 years and Oreo 3 years
Mary H from Archbold (an official volunteer!)--bleach and vinegar

I love this quote: "Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is. The way we cope with it, is what makes the difference".  Author unknown

We are in the middle of our drawer/bed bidding auction. Just go to the FFRC chatter's facebook page to see the latest. This auction ends promptly at 6:00pm tonight. Very shortly after that, we will also announce the winners. At 6:00, we will also have BOXES, but we will stop at 6:30 to do our LIVE afghan auction. This afghan is a beauty. It comes from S. Africa. As soon as this LIVE auction is over, if we still have more boxes, we will continue with them. Busy evening!

I still have a few items left from the last Day Sale. If you haven't received yours yet, please get in touch with me thru the e-mail ffrcmoss@gmail.com.  We aim to be 100% right.

Gallants wound is taking another healing phase. It's thinner and narrower and we're getting so close to being done with his treatments. He is only wearing his air collar about half the time. The six kittens, Caliboo, Calidora, Bixley, Bix, Jemison and Remison are eating about half from the plate and half from bottle/syringe feeding. We're making progress! The cats and kittens love having the low windows open in the Kabana Room. The new bird feeders that we put out are now beginning to have a few birds eating at them. Soon, we'll have lots of bird families visiting us!

Update on the construction: the vinyl siding is now all complete! The outside light fixture is in place. The gutters and downspouts are also in place. Next Tuesday, the "mud blowers" will be here! The guys will be coming to blow the mud onto the ceiling. This will be done in one day, then the ceiling paint can be applied. As soon as that is done, the finished walls will be put in. It's coming along. Tentatively, we have the floor to be done the third week of May, if all goes as planned! We're getting closer to being done.

Our oldsters are all doing great. Appetites are good and we have happy oldsters. The Covies were out yesterday for a whole day of visiting the farm yard. For the first time ever in all the years we have been here, we have ticks. Lots of ticks. So....every Covie, every Porchie received their monthly flea prevention, but we switched it to Frontline since this one is effective on ticks as well as fleas. We don't want those nasty things on our Covies and Porchies. We combed and combed them yesterday to remove as many as possible. We also sprayed the outside of their buildings. All of them look good and seem to be very happy.

Friday, May3

Hug your Cat today! Yes, today is National Hug your Cat day. Lots of hugs to give. What a great day!

We received our Petfinder report. The 12 cats that were looked at the most were: Spruce, Goodness, Zelda, County, Maui, Dahnay, Georgia, Linden, Cypress, Octavia, Buckeye, Preakness, Dove.

Tonight at 6 pm (FFRC time zone), starts the beginning of a different auction. We will be showing 6 of the really neat drawer/bed's that Joni and Angie have been working on. They are really nice. This auction ends at 6 pm sharp tomorrow night. Then at 6:30 pm tomorrow, we will stop boxes and have another LIVE afghan auction--using the beautiful red/white/blue/tan afghan. This afghan came to us all the way from Africa. It's stunning!

Odds and ends:
**Wanda is donating a beautiful portrait of Putter for the Catathon. It is absolutely wonderful. Thanks, Wanda.
**Please remember, you can post two pictures a day on the Chatter's facebook page. The reason? If we do more than that, the site gets flooded with so many pictures that it's hard to read any of the other items. Thanks!
**You know those cute emoticons? We all love to use them. But I'd sure like to ask you to limit it to one or two per posts on the cam chat. The reason is that it bogs down the bandwidth. Those fun little pictures really drag down the cam. I appreciate it!
**The 2013 cookbooks have been ordered! They will be in before the Catathon. Many thanks to Leenie for organizing and handling this fundraiser.

We had BOXES last night! What a week of being extra thankful!

Walter! What a wonderful cat he is. He has more mobility than the other CH cats. He's got a very affection side and than he has a very ornery/playful side. Remember, our boy is also deaf, so he cannot hear if a cat meows loudly, if he would play too hard. He's learning though as to what is "proper cat play behavior". Give him time--he's doing just fine and in the meantime, we are keeping a close eye on his play antics with the cats and kittens.

We have a new cat to add to the Rescue Center. She had been hanging around an apartment complex since January. A few people were feeding her. She's a young adult, black and white and so very sweet. She loves people and seems to get along well with the other cats. Her name is Mira. It's pronounced mirrra. Her name means peace in Slavic.

Remember to hug your cat today!

Help! I've climbed too high!

Thursday, May 2

Oh my garsh--we had so much fun yesterday in celebration of winning! Lots of people stopping by, which we enjoyed. We had a sardine preliminary "try-it" in the early morning, then 2 big Sardine Challenges in the afternoon We did 2 big tours of the outside of the rescue center, the whole rescue center, the new construction area and kitty city. During the entire day, we held up lots of kittens and cats to be viewed. We also had the "hair event"! Janet's hair became bright yellow and green--very becoming! Jimmy was decorated (in purple) with a "we won" on the top of his head, along with his whiskers that became purple! Eric had his hair bright green. I had a "purple bad hair day", mixed with a ton of mouse!! Later, I sported just a bit of purple hair! Janet had full intentions of shaving her hair, but at the last minute, Catman put in an offer she couldn't resist! $1,000 NOT to shave her head--couldn't resist that! We all had such a good time!

We also had our sardine cake, pizza and doughnuts. The cats also had 2 big soup bones that had lots of meat on them--they sure enjoyed these! In the morning, we had put up lots of decorations throughout the rescue center. All in all, we had a great day of celebration. On the cam chat, everyone was able to use CAPS all day long, for whatever reason! The reason we did all this? In honor of YOU all out there, as our way of saying thank you for your votes and support. We also showed everyone the tumblers with the FFRC logo on it, that will be sold at the Catathon.

Our college cats were returned late afternoon yesterday. All had full x-rays, lab work and most had stool samples done. All stool samples were normal. Polo (remember he was a HBC) showed a past fracture at his tail base. So, due to soreness still there, we have already started his laser treatment program. Maui is just fine--passed everything. Snappy too is just fine. Pushkiss has a slight URI, which we had already started treatment on him with antibiotics, but everything else was fine. PaddyCake showed a grade 3/6 heart murmur on his left side. Remember PaddyPurr showed a grade 5/6 on his right side. We will be going over all this with our vets so they are aware. It's surprising though, how smart these cats are, once they are returned to us! They've got their college degree now!

All is fine here. The group of orphaned 6 kittens that we have been syringe feeding, are just beginning to eat on their own. We are doing half and half with the self feeding and syringe feeding. Won't be long until they are on their own!

Once again, thank you for making this win possible thru The Animal Rescue Site and Petfinders!

Weeja thinks you all are awesome for helping us win!

Wednesday, May 1

WE WON, WE WON, WE WON!!!  We found out early this morning, that we won!  What a wonderful way to start the day! I am thrilled beyond thrilledness. I am also so extremely grateful for YOU!  You and all our voters are the reason we won--YOU have made this possible. To see Friends of Felines Rescue Center as the grand winner is something I'll never forget!

This win means more than just the $10,000. It represents to me the support that is with the rescue center. This is HUGE to me. Cats and people are important to me and this rescue center. I truly am thankful. We have indeed become a cam-family.

We have been voting for 111 days! No wonder our fingers got tired! Pssst--oh! Putter has just spoken and he too is very happy!

I would also like to thank the following for their donations:

At 11:00 is the purple hair and shaved head event! Thru out the day, we'll be showing cats and kittens, doing a couple full tours, have cake and pizza, and just chit chat with you all day. Tuesday, April 30

Don't forget to vote! Oh no, wait, the voting is over! Hooray, hooray! Now the waiting game begins. We should hear the official news Weds. morning. I am so so excited and can't hardly wait! We are planning a party though! And we'd love to have you pop in and join us during the day.

Here's the scoop so far. We're hoping we hear from The Animal Rescue Site by mid morning, because at 11:00 starts the promised "hair dos". Yes, Janet has said she would have her head shaved if we win! Our volunteer, Peggy S has agreed to do it for her! Then comes the unveiling of the purple hair for me. I don't know what I was thinking when I said months ago, that if we win, I'd dye my hair (not all of it) purple. But, I must keep to what I said!

We also have some pretty neat decorations to put up. We want the cats to know it's a very special day.

After the "hair do event", we'll give you a grand tour of the Rescue Center. We'll even start outside and show you Albert's Memorial Garden. It's not a sad place--we're grateful that these cats shared part of their lives with us. We will then come back inside and show you from start to back--the Kabana Room, the lavender front office, the main part of the rescue center, June's Room with Kitty Q and her kittens, Kitty Campus Room, Cat's Corner Room with Catsparella and her kittens. Then we'll go to the far side of the rescue center. Next comes the Welcome Room Office and then Thumper's Room. We'll even go out the door and show you the new construction--the Mail Room and the extended Thumper's Room. Last, we'll show you the inside of Kitty City, even though the cats are in Cat's Cove, you'll see the inside of their winter home.

Next, comes the much awaited sardine tasting party. There's lots of kinds of sardines and I had promised to eat a can of sardines if we win (or maybe.....almost a can??!!!) Janet, our friend from New Zealand (who doesn't really like sardines), had promised to eat sardines too if we win. So, get ready to watch this yummy sardine tasting party!

Soon after that, we'll give the cats a very special treat--they love ham bones, but this time, they get a soup bone! I already told them and then found them lining up at the door! Bonito flakes will follow as a desert.

Sometime in the afternoon, we'll be having pizza delivered and also enjoying that beautiful sardine cake. Sorry, but the cake is just decorated like a sardine can!

Again in the afternoon, we will give another tour of the entire place, in case you missed it earlier or would like to see it again. We'd also like to show you close ups then of all the individual kittens from each litter and of course, their mamas.

At 6:00, we'll have our normal BOXES. We'll also show you the chart of the voting history for this win! I'd like to show you as much of the rescue center as we can, for your enjoyment, since you were a big big part in this contest.

I understand that we came in first place for a weekly contest by Pawalla...the joy of cats and dogs! To win, you had to have the most votes. This means they will be sending some boxes of their special foods that we can give away at adoptions and also some cat toys! This is so nice and I appreciate Pawalla and your votes!

Many thanks too for your donations to FFRC:
Lawrence G--donation thru PayPal for FFRC
Thecatsmeow59--for designing the mousepad that I received the other day--I love the design
Ruth-TN--blankies for the covies, porchies and barnes. Also items for a children's basket for the Catathon
Teresa S from IL--donation to FFRC, in memory of their dog Violet
Nancy E from AL--donation to FFRC thru PayPal

I have so enjoyed all of our visitors. It's wonderful to meet them face to face and get to know them. They not only gave of their time to help us here at the rescue center, but have become good friends.
Napa leaves today. We'll be taking her to the airport. Beth/Eaglewatcher will be here yet this week! Janet/Janak will be here thru next week.

This Friday at 6 pm we will begin another weekend auction. It starts Friday and ends Saturday at 6 pm. This one will be different! We will be auctioning off 6 of those beautiful drawer beds that Joni and Angie have been making. They are awesome. We will also add something else this weekend too. On Saturday, we'll start boxes as normal, at 6:00 pm. But, then we will stoop and have another LIVE auction. This will be with the beautiful red/white/blue/tan afghan that Rosemary B from South Africa made. More information later. For your information: on the first big Day Sale, we made $1700.  On the second Day Sale we made $2200.  This is a HUGE help to the rescue center.

The cats and kittens are all doing great. We had a major turn-around yesterday. The kittens and Ruthie Ann that were in Cat's Corner Room are now out and about. Then we moved Catsparella and her 7 kittens into Cat's Corner Room. Kitty Q was then able to have June's Room with her 2 kittens. Because the 6 orphans are growing, they then moved into Dodger's Pen. It was a train of progression! All are doing fine and growing.

That Walter is such a play kitten. He can be rough one minute, then a sweetie the next. He is literally everywhere in the rescue center! We sent 5 more cats to college yesterday! We sent Paddy Cake, Pushkiss, Snappy, Maui and Polo. This will be good experience for the vet tech students. Our cats will get another full physical, full body x-rays, microchip implanted, complete blood work and stool samples done. All this at no cost to FFRC! They will return Weds. late afternoon.

Gallant--he's probably wondering when he has to have that collar put back on!!
